Oh boy, do I love editorial notes left in a published piece. A glimpse inside the minds that run your favorite publication. Take, for example, today's death announcement of former child star Shirley Temple in the Chron.

Shirley's shocked face says it all.

In reality, LaSalle or his editor probably didn't want to use cliche words in the headline. Understandable. They eventually went with "Child star Shirley Temple dies at age 85."

On the plus side, Temple is now eligible for the publication's top dead people.

Headline writing is a lost art. Don't try to tell us tweets are the same thing. Because they're not. Tweets are hollow cries for help disguised as a description of one's lunch order. Headlines, on the other hand, are designed to get bored BART riders to read your article about the Oakland A's. Which is exactly what this one from today's Chronicle Sports page does.

So, congratulations to San Francisco Chronicle Staff Writer Susan Slusser, you handily won our headline of the week with the racy pun: "A's Colon roughed up by nemesis Tigers". Please do keep them coming.

[Note: Yes, we know how newspapers work and that staff writers don't typically write their own headlines, but for the sake of, you know, not killing a joke we're giving props to Slusser. Carry on. Your morning coffee is getting cold.]

It looks good on someone as big as you."

Yes, some homeless guy called us fat. Needless to say, we did not give him any spare change.

Warriors 129 Suns 114- So the Phoenix Suns, a team that many pick to win the title this year and a team that was possibly one horrendous David Stern judgment from winning the title last year, came into the Oracle riding an eight game winning streak. So what happened? The Warriors whumped 'em. Monta Ellis had 31 points, including 15 consecutive points in the fourth quarter, and Stephen Jackson had 32 to beat PHX. The Warriors have now won six out of seven, leading to the inevitable joke about how they've totaled the amount of victories of both football teams, but as everyone's in a good mood about football, we'll leave it better off alone.

-It looks like the Raiders victory over the Chiefs is going to delay the Coming of JaMarcus at least a week as "Long Balls" Lane Kiffin has already announced Duante as the starting QB next week against the Broncos. We're not sure what the point of all this is either, but maybe it has something to do with the fact that the Raiders are technically only three games behind division leading San Diego.

-Is Sabean going to trade Tim the Enchanter for Miguel Cabrera? Were the A's really interested in Barry before the whole indictment thing? Read it for yourself.

Yikes.

The main cause of concern for not keeping tidy books is that it could mean that money is being spent for personal, not campaign-related, use. Apparently, Migden's reports only list the amount spent and the name of the credit card company...and that's all. (Hey, she sounds better at managing her finances than us. But we digress.)

Oh, and the cattiest part of all, "[t]he Fair Political Practices Commission launched an investigation of Migden's expenses after receiving a formal complaint from Assemblyman Mark Leno...who is a candidate to unseat her in the June 2008 election." Oh, you two. Can't you hug it out over Grasshoppers at the Lex? Don't the gays and the dykes have an strained enough relationship as it is?

Locally, Hollywood protesters marched in support of the Jena 6 and Orange County deputies tasered a 15-year-old autistic boy (good job guys). Speaking of Orange County and suburban areas, ABC's Desperate Housewives has a new marketing technique: advertise on the white stripes that define a parking space (we're still not going to watch). In the restaurant scene, what's going over at the California Pizza Kitchen?

Bostonist got a crash course in what not to do this week. They discovered a Craigslist post from a Harvard Man who might be worse at dating than Tom Brady is. One woman attempted to evade the long arm of the law by hiding in a clothes dryer. It didn't work. And the Red Sox are showing Bostonist nothing but suckage, suckage, and more suckage. But then an MIT student came along and topped just about everybody when she walked into Logan Airport with a fake bomb strapped to her chest. Bostonist is still trying to comprehend that one. The Aqua Teen Guys are not available for comment.

DCist suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Senate Republicans this week, when they voted not to allow legislation to give the District a voting member of the House of Representatives to go forward. They spent the rest of the week consoling themselves by comparing the best wood-fired pizzas in town and complaining about the city's terrible traffic ranking. They also discovered the greatest web site ever and questioned the police department's account of the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy.

After cooling down from a hot weekend of many badass Sunset Junction Street Fair photo dispatches, LAist asked a question sacreligious to many hardcore local fast food chain fans: is Fatburger better than In-N-Out? It is rumored that the burger debate angered so many readers that it led to a 7:00 a.m. bicycle heist, victimizing one of their writers (who the hell lurks around at this godforsaken hour with bolt cutters?). More punishment in Los Angeles came with the arrest of immigration activist Elvira Arellano where it made national headlines, except in local papers where the story was buried. On an ultra local level, they caught up with artist Juan Devis about the Boyle Heights cybermural project.

Bostonist has been enjoying the whimsical, carefree last days of summer by attending one of the city's best festivals, and they're also looking forward to football season. Bridget Moynahan finally had Tom Brady's baby - good news because Brady won't be skipping out on this season's opening game. In others sports news, Red Sox pitcher Jonathan Papelbon is looking to end his summer on a high note. He invented a new pitch and christened it with the bold name of "The Slutter." Unfortunately, Papelbon's fellow pitcher, Daisuke Matsuzaka, appears to be ending his summer with a whimper. Meanwhile, the local schools are gearing up. One of greater Boston's more prominent colleges is gloating about how rich they are, while another is suffering yet another embarrassment at the hands of its athletes. Last, but not least, a nearby town stood up to a prominent national institution - and its actions are having a global impact.

The folks at Chicagoist are still cleaning up from the monster storms that hit their area Thursday. Before they donned their waders, however, they found that readers were glad that Elvira Arellano was deported back to Mexico but frustrated that the French are refusing to extradite a suspected murderer back home to stand trial. Lucky for them, there's a new beer company in town, so they can drink their problems away, at least for a while. Just don't bike home inebriated in the wider bike lanes Governor Blagojevich signed into law. Finally, a post about the kid-friendly qualities of a popular brunch spot led to the readers ripping each other to shreds in the comments.

SFist, yet again, dealt with a couple of old items resurrected by new controversy: the Tenderloin Housing Clinic's cam scandal and the evacuation-of-Golden-Gate-Park kerfuffle one month later. "Cult Alert!" flyers warning against YWAM papered downtown San Francisco. Long story short, the series devastated the team that season and knocked them out of the playoffs, making it easier for Fox to buy the Dodgers and promptly trash the franchise. Good stuff. Anyhoo, the Enchanter got Cained (our new verb for when a pitcher pitches a good game only to lose due to the Giants ineptitude) as the bullpen gave up four runs in the eighth to lose the game. The damage was done by Messer’s Kline and Messenger and is it us or does Randy Messenger look like a taller, skinner Turtle from "Entourage." As for Bonds, he did nothing of much importance but we couldn’t help but notice that when he hit what looked like a decent shot at hitting the homer, the fans stood up in excitement only to see it turn into just another fly out. When he was taken out, a huge portion of fans left the stadium and yes, it is fairly typical of Dodgers fans, but it was still a 3-2 game at the time.

And one more thing-- sadly police say that they found traces of cocaine in Rod Beck's house when they investigated his suicide. When we heard about his death, that was unfortunately one of the first things we thought of, that it was somewhat related to drugs even though we really hoped it wasn't. It was.

A's 3 Tigers 2- Yeah, the A's won, but the thing we're more concerned with is that the Yankees are now only two behind the Indians for the wild card spot (and three behind the Tigers). Jesus Frickin' Christ, people, won't that team go down? They're the Jason Voorhees of baseball-- everytime you think they're killed they keep on coming back. With the Giants out and the A's out, there was nothing more we were looking forward to than some serious Yankees schadenfreude and now we can't even get that. So, anyways, go Tribe!
Maybe Bud Selig should institute some sort of "best interest of baseball" rule saying that if Barry isn't going to play, the Giants should announce it first thing in the morning so fans know they don't have to go, Bud can have a nice night out in the town, and all the press hordes can either go home or just hang out in the press booth and get drunk.

That doesn't mean that Barry didn't make some news, however: on Bob Costas's HBO show, Curt Schilling opened up his prolific big mouth and noted that both Barry and Mark McGwire have never actually denied or fought accusations of being on the juice. In response, Barry went after not Schilling, but Costas, and said: "You mean that little midget man who absolutely knows jack … about baseball, who never played the game before? You can tell Bob Costas what I called him." He then added about all the accusations, "don't worry, my day will come."

In other Bonds related fun, Grant from McCovey Chronicles has a column listing his "Favorite Barry Bonds Homeruns", a fun little discussion starter. In all honesty, we couldn't come up with much in the way of a list as he's hit so many of them, they all sort of blend into one. But we'll try anyways

Oh No, Ed Jew!: Conrad Black

SFist Nick forwarded along an unintentionally-hilarious article by professional provocateur</...

SF News

Bay Area

blogs

Christopher Hitchens

City

City Attorney

Conrad Black

District

Ed Jew

election

fraud

Gavin Newsom

headlines

laws

News+Sports

Newsom

SF Politics

race

Rob Black

San Francisco

San Francisco Bay

San Francisco Bay Area

SFist Nick

the fray

this week

rita

Postscript: I am writing this from the San Francisco Bay Area, where all summer a local politician named Ed Jew has been in trouble over his filing of an allegedly bogus claim of residency. The headlines on the case invariably give his full name (he is of Asian descent), as in last Saturday's "City Attorney Toughens Case Against Ed Jew." But the headlines about Conrad Black have very often said "Black Convicted." Is this discrimination on a subtle level? Or should Mr. Jew be glad that he has such a short first name?

What would Christopher Hitchens have made of the headlines about Rob Black in the District 6 race last year? Remember (former SFist) Eve's "Jew and Black Lead" election night blog post from the early returns?

Also, in today's actual Ed Jew news: Gavin Newsom says he's going to propose laws to make it tougher to lie about your residency and take cash from constituents, and is waiting to see how the civil and criminal trials go before jumping into the fray. Jew and Black lead!
