Exhausted ballots and exhausted bloggers -- in the District 6 race! This week's episode: Everybody Hates RCV.
District 6 -- DALY WINS. Check here. Congratulations, Chris!
And in other RCV news -- Ed Jew wins.
And in obsessive refresh ability -- SFIST WINS!! We got our post up first over everyone else -- up by 3:47 p.m. MUST CREDIT SFIST!
Updated numbers are here. Results below. Rob Black got to 40%. We're cranking through the math and will throw it in the post after the jump. Update: Okay, it's up. We'll throw more stats in as we think of 'em.
Okay, so the totals that appear below are the FINAL FINAL numbers (though not officially certified). [Update: Nope, not quite -- there's still 1500 provisionals for both District 4 and 6 that need to be hand-counted.] The numbers we had before were the unofficial count as of 2:30 p.m. The RCV page has all the final totals as "pass one," and we've transcribed them here.
CHRIS DALY . . . . . . . . . . 7,298 48.18

The absentee and provisionals are in for today -- in the District 6 election! This week's episode: Everybody Hates It When We Do A Numbers Post.
Hey, the YouTube footage of Chris Daly's victory speech is up! See above. (Warning: It's about 15 minutes long. Plus, some R-rated language) You'll have to click after the jump to find partial footage of Sarah's (we gotta have something to make you keep reading.)
---
So the updated numbers for the ballot count in District 6 are in (the counts are reprinted after the jump so you can check our math). Here's what we've calculated (everyone, check our math).
As of today, the total votes in the district are 13,024. Daly has 6313 (48.47%) and Black has 5191 (39.86%). On election night, the total vote count was 11,018, Daly had 5471 votes (49.66%) and Black had 4312 (39.14%).
So this latest round of voting added 2006 votes (13,024-11,018). Daly gained 842 votes and Black gained 879. So Black got 43.8% of the new votes and Daly gained 42.0% -- meaning Black had an advantage of 1.8% in the same-day absentees and provisionals. The new difference between Daly and Black's votes is 1122 votes.
To win, Daly has to get 6513 votes (13,024 divided by 2, plus 1). That means he needs to pick up 200 more votes (6513-6313) in the RCV runoff.
So how's the RCV runoff going to work? Sooooo -- the bottom candidate (Robert Jordan) will be tossed out and the 89 ballots that had him listed in first place will then have their second-place votes redistributed. If after that, no one has a clear majority, they'll redistribute the votes of the next last place person.
Let's say that person is George Dias (who currently has 173 votes). So they take all the ballots listing George Dias as a top choice and redistribute those votes to the next person they have listed. At this point, if you voted for Jordan first and Dias second, they'll go to your third ranked choice for the second redistribution.
The next run is where the dreaded "exhausted ballot" comes into play. If Daly hasn't picked up 200 votes by the end of run 2, then we'll explain what happens at that point in our next post.
So the magic number for Daly for now is 200. (For ease of calculation from here on out, we're assuming that all the absentees and provisionals have been counted. If it turns out there are more still outstanding, we'll wait for the revised count and we'll update these numbers at that point.)
Okay, enough with the blah blah blah. Onto the Sarah Daly video!

Okay, time for a new District 6 post! We're going to try putting updates on the top of the post again, as news comes in.

--Beyond Chron has an article up about the low-income housing perspective on the D6 race, and praises the Daly campaign's organized SRO outreach, which got 70% of their identified Daly supporters to the polls. Beyond Chron also confirms that the notorious 37%-31% Black over Daly poll was taken over the telephone (which underestimated Daly's non-phone-owning base). And.... extra bonus! Suzeeqzee: they also reveal what Robert Haaland was doing on his vacation!
--There's talk on the SFWall about a Daly recall.
--Fog City Journal and Sarah Daly's speech make it into the New York Times. They forgave her, because they noted she had two empty champagne glasses in hand at the time.
--Also, we're kind of curious what you guys think on these next questions. What do you guys think was Daly's best/worst move in this race? What do you think were Rob Black's? And what role do you think blogs and readers of blogs will have in future local elections? We've got our thoughts on these topics -- which we'll share after you guys share yours!
After the jump -- Gavin's betrayal of Rob, and Rob Black's letter to his supporters. We're trying not to take up too much space on the front page of the site!

When does the RCV count begin -- in the District 6 election! And as promised earlier, this week's episode is indeed titled: Everybody Hates The Wait.
--Man, it sounds like we just missed the Dalys' almost-to-victory speeches at the DNA Lounge last night. Savannah Blackwell (yay! she's writing again!) has the good word. We're trying our best to get YouTube footage of Mrs. Chris Daly telling off "the motherf**kers at the Golden Gate Restaurant Association," and if we find it, you know we're going to pimp it in a separate post! And -- nooooo! The Dalys were thinking about moving to the 'burbs? Stay, Chris, stay! Do we have to give you the same speech we gave Potrero Hill Mike?
--On the 39% side, the mood was described by Pat Murphy over at the Sentinel as "grim" and words were "spoken through tightened lips." (Nice pictures of the scene at MoMo's, though!)
--There's some teeth-gnashing by the anti-Dalys on the SF Wall, and some gloating over at the Junto.
--And over there at the MSM, the Chron seems to be trying to make nice with Daly now that they've got four more years of entertaining local politics coverage to look forward to. Look, M&R's outraged -- today -- by the SFSOS lower-intestine ad. Meanwhile, the Examiner kicks the dirt and mutters "nuts!" under its breath in its terse coverage.
--An interesting stat, pointed out on SFJunto. Daly (5471, 49.66%) got fewer votes total than Alix Rosenthal (6260, 30.57%). Low turnout and lots of candidates in District 6, high turnout and fewer candidates in District 8.
--Someone give Matt Drake a job! Also, does anyone know exactly how much money was spent in the District 6 race? We thought we read an estimate of $300,000 in independent expenditures for Black and $120,000 in self-funding by Daly, but we're not sure if that's right. If you know, post it in the comments!
--We saw the headline "Padres Hire Black As Manager" on the Gate and our first thought was maybe that's why Rob Black was always at MoMo's! Similarly, we were shocked to also see the headline Daly Headed To Fourth Divorce.
We'll try and update this throughout the day as we hear stuff.

We vowed we wouldn't do it, but since we're obsessively hitting refresh on our browser every five minutes anyways, we might as well! We may take off in a bit to hit some of these election parties we've been hearing about, but here's where we are for now. Updates on top, like a mini-blog.
12:10 a.m.: Okay, we're calling it quits for today. The stats are: Daly at 49.66% with 5,471 votes and Black at 39.14% with 4,312. So to win, Daly's gotta get 5510 votes (total number of votes cast = 11,018, divide by two, plus 1). That means Daly needs to get 39 second place votes (5510-5471). RCV will toss out Robert Jordan's 75 first-place votes first and run through the second place choices of his supporters, and then Dias (142), and then Jimenez (189), etc. As soon as Daly gets 39 votes or more, he's declared the winner. [There's other mathematical possibilities but we're not going through them here. Stats folks, please feel free to pontificate in the comments about exhausted ballots and the like!]
They'll finish counting the rest of the absentees and provisionals, and then start the arduous RCV count. Probably we'll get the first numbers by Thursday or Friday. You should expect your next Everybody Hates Chris column to bear the title "Everybody Hates The Wait."
Thanks, you guys, for playing along with us! And we gotta say -- we have totally enjoyed reading everyone's comments throughout this election season. We hope you'll all stay with us at SFist post-Daly (and maybe suggest a good title for the upcoming columns about... the mayoral race!)
11:40 p.m.: Eve over there at the ChronBlog reports that Manuel Jimenez has conceded. He misspelled "congratulations." Also, the ChronBlog goes with a blog post about how "Everybody LOVES Chris." (with credit here, which we appreciate.) Oh, we see, now that it looks like Chris is ahead, the Chron's going to be all like, "we love you now, Chris!" We see through your cunning ploy, Ms. Batey! (We miss you, Eve! We wish we were liveblogging this election with you on this side!)
11:29 p.m.: The Guardian made it out to the Black event, which is described as "swanky." The Daly event, not so much with the swanky, we can report. (here's the Guardian's report from Club Daly -- we think we might have seen Amanda writing that post!) They're getting massages at MoMo's! We totally should have gone to that party. Black is upbeat about winning it in RCV.
11:25 p.m.: Anger and gnashing of teeth by Black supporters. It's not over until it's over, guys -- Daly's not at 50% yet. Bevan Dufty pulled out from second place in a runoff to win!
Also, some number mumbo-jumboing, for those of you who like that (Public Service Announcement's 11:10 p.m. post).
11:22 p.m.: Whoops! Sorry we turned the whole site italic there. We fixed the tag.
10:40 p.m.: Chris at 49.66%, Rob at 39.14%. 10:30 p.m. count, 98.97% of the vote in. It would be so Daly if he was like two votes away from 50% and then Black wins it in RCV.

Continue reading "Liveblogging District 6"This is it! Your District 6 election is finally here! This week's episode: Everybody Hates The District 6 Election.

That's a picture of Gavin Newsom voting early at City Hall -- and you know, we've heard he lives in District 6 now too. Gosh, who do you think he voted for for supervisor? (Also, he voted against Prop I. He's afraid of Question Time!) That wasn't very nice what Mr. Newsom said about Daly supporters either -- it's okay for his guys to send out flyers with pictures of human feces on them but not for Daly supporters to make a little noise?
District 6-ers (and everyone else), don't forget to GET OUT AND VOTE! And pass along any good stories you hear along the way too.
Update: We have our first claim of voting irregularities in District 6! (the link has gone in and out -- the Guardian's says it's under some kind of denial of service attack -- but keep trying it if it's not working. Executive summary -- reports of up to 20% of the precincts in District 6 with voting problems, including one precinct that opened 90 minutes late, and others with malfunctioning voting machines.)
Next Update: Britney Spears is divorcing Kevin Federline! They're not District 6 residents or anything, but -- Brit! Who announces a divorce on Election Day? "Oh, that'll be a good time for a quiet announcement; no one in the country will be obsessively checking news websites throughout the day."
Next update: Much-missed Savannah Blackwell returns with a pro-Daly spin on the numbers, while the Wall chats up Rob Black's chances. Meanwhile, the Daly campaign has issued a release noting the problems with voting this morning and urging everyone to remember you can vote until 8 p.m. tonight.
Next update: The Chron calls Daly's opponent "Bob Black." That sounds like a totally different person! Also, they confirm some voting problems in District 6.
After the jump: more pictures, election return parties, and DiggaSlidwell's latest YouTube masterpiece!

No, Viliam, wait! People haven't even finished (or in some cases, started) voting yet!
District 6 candidate (and first name on the ballot) Viliam Dugovic has thrown in the towel, sending along the following concession speech to his email list.
For same reason, we where put down .It was good experience, and if you will be able to see what I had opportunity to see , you will be able to do same, run fast as possible from San Francisco
Oh, Mr. Dugovic! Don't lose your faith in the electoral process!

We know this is completely wrong to admit, but voting here in San Francisco, the bluest of blue states, is always a bit unexciting. While the rest of the country is taking part in what we're always told is the Most Important Election Ever, we are once again left out of the thrills. Our gubernatorial race never took off and the race for Senate and Congress was such a no contest that one ran commercials featuring her grandchild and the other gave more speeches in Pennsylvania than here in her home city. It's kind of like rooting for the local Division AAA basketball team make their way through the Division AAA tourney while everyone else is obsessed with the NCAA Tourney. And while you want the local guys to win, you can't but help care more about schools you never attended in the Big Dance. What we're trying to say is that for whatever reason we seem more emotionally invested in the Virginia Senate Race than whatever is going on here.
Did we mention that we know we're wrong?
Nevertheless what happens here is more important because while the possible defeat of George Allen will be a good thing because it'll make us less embarrassed to be an American, it won't do a damn thing about our schools. And while the eminent clobbering of Rick Santorum fills us with deep joy, it won't do a thing to clean our streets, stop all the violence, or make rents cheaper.
So, what we're saying is vote. Seriously, vote. You might not care and you might think it's essentially a battle between a douche and a turd, but still vote. If only because it gives you the satisfaction of knowing that you tried. And it gives you the smugness of knowing you were one of the estimated 38% of the population who cared.
So, dear reader, what can you expect from SFist tomorrow? We'll be (hopefully) providing an ongoing diary of a poll worker as she sits around watching people come in and do their civic duty. Is it boring? Is it fulfilling? Will she be told to throw the results into the Bay?
And starting at 8, we'll provide live updates, that is, if our illin' DSL will let us.
Finally, SFist is not providing any sort of handy-dandy endorsement guide like the Bay Guardian does (this might be a surprise to some of you, but we really don't endorse candidates or support one over the other. We just want them to give us fun things to write about). But if you still need some election help, we'll give you our handy-dandy election recap/guide after the jump.

Only one more day until... the District 6 election! (And thank God for that.) This week's episode: Everybody Hates The Last Day!
Daly supporter and video savant DiggaSlidwell forwards along his latest magnum opus, a comparison between the Daly HQ and the Black HQ last night. This is in response to Pat Murphy's Sentinel story that Gavin Newsom said the Black campaign was the most exciting he'd seen. One might argue in response it's not a good sign that one candidate's people are worried enough that they're working around the clock two nights before the election -- but the Dalyheads do look like they're having fun!
Another issue that's come up is that Daly claims to have 6000 votes locked up, and Black claims to have 7000. Left in SF, however, notes that 13,000 exceeds the number of voters in D6. Either there's a math problem, or -- vote early and often, folks! No wonder the feds are monitoring tomorrow's election.
Stay tuned to this space as Nov. 6 news breaks in District 6! (Updates after the jump -- now three!)

It's the last weekend before.... the District 6 election! This week's episode: Everybody Hates The Final Push.
--Bar crawl with Chris Daly and the League of Pissed Off Voters tonight, on a party bus. Show up at 9 p.m. outside Daly HQ on 16th and Mission to decorate the bus (!!!), and the group leaves around 9:30 for a tour of the best drinking holes in District 6. There'll be some leaflet distribution, a fair amount of alcohol consumption, and maybe some booty-shaking as well! RSVP to Heather or call 415-971-3523 if you want to meet them along the way. And guys -- send us your pictures!
--Apparently there was a hott swanky socialite party thrown on Thursday by Swells By The Numbers favorite Denise Hale for Rob Black at the Newsom-affiliated restaurant Jack Falstaff's. Anyone want to send us pictures from it?
--Manuel Jimenez refutes claims that he ran an "irrelevant" campaign, and accuses all the other candidates of imitating his stray cat style. For instance, he was the first District 6 candidate to post a video of himself riding a bike through the district. Chris Daly, you're a biter!
--Viliam Dugovic: To the graduating District 6 class of 2006, we salute you.
After the jump: District 6 Halloween costumes, the salaried truth behind the dueling Daly and Black hypemen, and some other YouTube clips we were sent!

We don't know who these young moppets are, but look at those big smiles for Rob Black!
After the jump: Jimenez's family, Drake's nephew, and Chris and Jack Daly. We couldn't find any pictures of any of the other candidates with kids in tow -- but if you've got any, send 'em on over!

Sometimes we forget about the other candidates running -- in the District 6 election! This week's episode: Everybody Hates A Snowman.
We have a late-breaking addition to the District 6 Chart Of Negativity! District 6 candidate Viliam Dugovic has sent out the following negative e-mailer.

Is that top picture Nixon and Spiro Agnew? Which is supposed to be Chris and which is supposed to be Rob?
There is no denying that the snowman rocks, though. Check out Dugovic's website too (but note that it plays "Pomp and Circumstance" as it loads).
Full-size version of the e-mailer after the jump.

Everybody hates Chris -- but everyone loves a charticle! This week's episode: Everybody Hates The Negatives.
So much negative information these days! Does Rob Black really hate unions? Does Chris Daly take dirty money? Does Matt Drake shamelessly pander to baby-lovers? (Congratulations on your new nephew, Matt!)
It's just so hard to keep it all straight -- who's saying what about whom now? So we here at SFist have generously put together our Chart Of Negativity, after the jump. It's broken down by category, with winners picked in each. In the comments -- add your favorite counterexamples and yell at us for not agreeing with you!
Now, let's see if we can find where we keep all those html table templates.....
