At a gas station in San Bruno, a surveillance video caught Thursday's natural gas explosion and fire on film. "You can see one man getting ready to fill up his car when something catches his attention," notes NBC Bay Area, who first aired the footage. "That something was a huge fireball caused by an explosion of a 30-inch pipe."

The woman running across the street with a kid in her arms, for lack of a better cliche, is heartbreaking.

While there's no sound on the film, "people said there was a deafening whooshing noise that reminded them of a jet engine."

Our parent site, Gothamist, tells us that "WNBC reports that the letters, which arrived today, included a photo of the Army recruiting center 'before it was bombed and...the words 'We did it.'" Which group is claiming responsibility, exactly, remains to be known.

According to the AP, Senator Dianne Feinstein's office sent the following email to other lawmakers:

"A few offices on the House side have received a letter today addressed to 'Members of Congress' with a picture of a man standing in front of the Times Square recruiting station that was bombed in New York today with the statement 'We did it.' He is standing in front of it with his arms spread out and he's attached his political manifesto."

The email, according to Gothamist, also advised people not to open the letters and contact the police.

Today's Times Square attack caused minimal damage to a "New York military recruiting station before dawn Thursday and police were searching for a hooded bicyclist seen on a surveillance video pedaling away," according to CBS. Although the blast was minor, it could have caused "injury and even death."

San Francisco's Big Brother Cinéma Vérité Sucks, Claim Critics

Choppy footage: San Francisco Police Department via the Chron</spam>

SF News

big brother

cameras

chicago

Chron

crime

District

footage

Gavin Newsom

Mayor

Mayor Gavin

Mayor Gavin Newsom

Mission District

Newsom

Police Department

Run

San Francisco

san francisco police department

surveillance

While Chicago

Brock Keeling

And speaking of cameras...

While Chicago has seen crime rates plummet to their lowest numbers in over four decades due to the windy city's Big Brother program, San Francisco's attempt at panopticon-ish camera security is failing. Ever since the 68 city-funded cameras started rolling, our city's surveillance program has resulted in a single arrest. That was over 19 months ago.

Why the lag, you ask? Well, for starters, "choppy" video streaming, above, at 16th and Mission streets. According to the Chronicle:

Run on a modest budget, Mayor Gavin Newsom's surveillance camera program has produced footage that is disjointed and less clear than the nearly seamless and sharp quality of video that the devices are capable of delivering, a Chronicle review found.

The difference can be dramatic, leaving police with less potential evidence. A review of videos taken last year by four cameras at 16th and Mission streets found a striking problem with the cameras' frame rate, or the number of images produced per second.

On average, the Mission District-perched cameras didn't even average one frame per second, making it difficult, if not impossible, to snap, trap and prosecute our city's most randy mischief makers.
We found this short clip of people frolicking at the Sutro Baths -- which, really, looks like so much fun! -- shot by Thomas Edison on October 25, 1897. But our question is this: how did they get their towels to dry? Sutro Baths must have supplied them, right? Unless of course you had to bring your own. But we lived out in that perma-fog part of SF, and our towels never dried unless we put them in a dryer for well over an hour.
