Your Day in Protest - Transportation this Morning

We came into work late this morning, partly because of a fine breakfast, partly to avoid the inevitable transportation mess that would result from today's protest. As of about 10:15 a.m, here's what's going on.

  • Market Street is closed east of Kearny. We were biking and there was no way we could get through.
  • Someone has broken a fire hydrant on Grant at Post, essentially blocking the street with a water jet. Two cops were there in a truck, watching.
  • About fifty policemen with helmets but without those plastic shields, walking east on Market from Powell.
  • Drums and shouting, but things seemed pretty calm.

In general, the city seemed tense this morning, hunkered down. How was it for you this morning? Throw updates in the comments if you like.

from my window above California, it appears the ratio of protesters to police is one to one.

i like the hybrid bus that's following the convoy of cop cars, in case anyone gets tired.

it's crazy but exhilarating downtown this a.m. god, i love san francisco

Wait until that same dozen or so anarchists show up and start breaking windows and burning shit. Things will get more interesting by nightfall.

Protests, shmotests.

Things looked pretty normal looking eastward from 8th street around 10a.

From http://www.indybay.org:

"Words Against War poetry reading underway on the corners of Market and Montgomery."

Surely the end of the war is now imminent.

its pretty tense at market/montgy right now. pics and vidz later when i get home.

Been following along on indybay for the last few - looks like things are about to come to a head at Market/Montgomerey. Anyone work down there who can see from above?

I work directly across from the TransAmerica Pyramid, on the 9th floor. I had a conference call this morning and couldn't hear a thing with all the clamoring below.

Of course, that was nothing compared to the 3 years I lived overlooking Market. Every Saturday at 10am, like clockwork, I'd hear the bongos and the bullhorns, and see "Free Mumia" (or whoever) signs for miles.

Someone should inform protestors that from more than 20 feet away, no one can understand what they're saying--their cause du jour is just noise.

I'm lucky I don't work in downtown.

Yeah, the Death Star must feel pretty cozy right about now.

I ran into this protest at 8:30am this morning on my way to work. Protest takes place outside of the Chevron building.

Yep, quite cozy. Plenty of ample parking for our TIE fighters and the Millennium Falcon.

Days like this I am happy NOT to work in SF. As are, I bet, a lot of other people, even some very lefty antiwar types.

Saw the only pro-war "protester" on Market. He was not shrill, not screaming and actually kind of funny.
