Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their registration to become Democrats. I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans." One motivating reason: Specter is lagging behind a challenger in the Republican primary. President Obama told Specter, "You have my full support. [We're] thrilled to have you," and now the Democrats have a near-filibuster-proof majority—they'll have it, if Al Franken is ever seated in Minnesota. The GOP, reportedly caught off-guard, is calling an emergency meeting. SFGate points out that Specter's "legacy as former chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee was seating [the] two conservative Supreme Court justices...Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito."

Have You Heard About "The Plot"?

Well, frankly, neither had we. This is part of "The Plot." Instigated by Rush Limbaugh, the theory is that Hillary Clinton would be easier for Republican fave, John McCain, to beat at election time. By having Republicans voting for Hils in the primary instead of Barack Obama, this will help ensure that McCain will be the victorious one in the White House. Supposedly.

While you're not (technically) allowed to change party affiliations day of the primary -- protocol calls for one to sign a pledge card promising to support that party in the future -- the article reports that "dozens and dozens of Republicans scribbled addendums onto their pledges as new Democrats: 'For one day only.' 'I don't believe in abortion,'" and were rarely challenged by poll workers on their party change.

This certainly throws a twist into why Hillary won Ohio, doesn't it?

Cult Alert!

Please be advised:

Youth With a Mission (YWAM) has been under investigation as a dangerous cult. Several former missionaries have accused YWAM of using brainwashing methods in their Discipleship Training School (DTS). Rick Ross, an internationally recognized cult expert, was called on to investigate. In his report he stated: "YWAM practices the so-called "shepherding" leadership method. Implementing direct control over their members through "discipleship" training. This training appears to employ recognized techniques of thought reform and mind control…” See www.RickRoss.com [here] for the complete report. Or just Google: YWAM Cult.

Several complaints have also been filed with the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services regarding YWAM’s repeated harassment of homeless Catholics, and Gays.

Homeless people have described YWAM’s Reach-up program as "brainwashing" and "mind games."

In 2006 YWAM produced and directed the ABC TV mini-series Path to 9/11, which Democrat and Republican pundits alike derided [Bipartisan togetherness? Aw.] for its gross inaccuracies and distortion of the events leading up to the September 11th attacks. Some scenes are widely recognized as "complete fabrications."

If you have been harassed by YWMAers because of your religion or sexual orientation, please contact: 415-346-3740 or stop by the Coalition on Homelessness, 468 Turk Street.

If you are, or have been, a member of YWAM, we would also like to speak with you.

(UPDATE: The Coalition on Homelessness is NOT investigating YWAM. They have nothing to do with the mad "Cult Alert!" flyer poster, so please, Bay Area media outlets, stop contacting them.)

Happy Paper Trails

While most of the 2006 elections are over, there's still a bit of a contention coming from, where else, Florida. Nothing, Nada, Zilch. Which means there's no way anyone can tell who really won or not. So despite the fact the Sarasota disctrict is a Democratic district, the Republican is now in Washington getting a crash course in how to be a congress person (with such classes of "What To Do if You Diddle a Page" or "Earmarks: Live It, Learn It, Love It" and for Republicans, "Why You Should Never Vote Against the President Despite the Fact He's an Idiot") while the Democrat is suing to get in, the with help from Howard Dean and the new Democratic majority .

So what does all of this have to do here in the Yay Area? The new head of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee is our very own Dianne Feinstein and DiFi is on the case. Once she moves into position of power, she promises to propose legislation that in the Senate (there's a similar bill about to be proposed in the House) would force electronic voting machine companies to supply a paper trail. She also wants it so that all of the vote counting software will be checked out and the code possibly made public.

There's a good chance that this legislation will place. By now, everyone is starting to figure out that the system as we have it is unworkable. And Democrats, for whatever reason, are a little touchy about unreliable election results.

But why, once again, are we bringing it up? Because by 2008, every Democrat will be so tied to San Francisco that Barrack Obama will have to hold a press conference to deny he ever went to Trannyshack and commercials will run against John Edwards accusing him of getting naked and covering himself in mud at Burning Man.

Anyways, you could read the article yourself, but here's the shorter version:

-You never hit it big in politics until they make fun of you on "Saturday Night Live." That is when people watched SNL.
-Pelosi is "poised" which is another euphemism for never not smiling despite how uncomfortable the situation is. Of course, that could be the botox
-We're not just "loony" but "ripe for satire" and hey, that's our job.
-Case in point, us calling for Bush's impeachment and the whole JROTC thing. Good thing this article was written before the whole "whack off for world peace" thing
-The truth is we're actually a bunch of tech geek/dot.com millionaires to be and Nestor Makhno, where did you go to?
-San Francisco is just like Baltimore (!)
-Bevan calls Pelosi "pragmatic," the Bay Guardian calls her a "sell-out", Tommi Avicolli Mecca calls her both not very liberal and a kiss-ass, while John Burton calls her "not a kook" but an "Italian-Catholic grandmother who goes to church every f-----g Sunday."
-Gavin has flecks of grey in "his famous pompadour".
-Pelosi doesn't come off as being one of the "loony left" as she seems to rise above it. Never actually being seen in San Francisco helps.
-Gavin isn't a big fan of the JROTC decision. Like rolling his eyes and visibly squirming displeasure.

And finally, we leave the last word to Mayor McDreamy himself: "We have to work through the clichés. But then I can’t wait to showcase the real virtues of this city. The rest of the country should be so lucky." Ah, said like a true San Franciscan-- when in doubt, just point out how beautiful it is here. Because, well, that usually does shut everyone up (we know, we've done it many times before).

You know, we're okay with the article. We can take it. But the thing that bugs us the most, the worst thing they said, was not about our politics or our attitude, it's this: they compare us to Baltimore. Baltimore!

Good heavens.

Pelosi backed John Murtha, the big bear of a guy from Pennsylvania who became the leading anti-war Democrat, while all of her co-horts backed the previous #2 Dem, Steny Hoyer. After much back and forth and salivating from the press, Hoyer beat out Murtha. Cue stories about Democratic backbiting and infighting.

Now Hoyer and Pelosi go way back as not really liking each other. At one point, Hoyer tried to wrestle Pelosi's position away from her. They made nice for awhile but then Nancy went for Murtha over Hoyer. Most pundits thought it an interesting choice as Murtha is known for pretty much nothing other than rolling in pork and getting bribed by the FBI during ABSCAM. The thinking is because Pelosi used Murtha as cover the past year over Iraq and it was some sort of back-scratching type thing. And they apparently actually respect each other.

Now things like this happen-- Newt Gingrich had the same thing happen to him in '94 and the result was Tom DeLay. But as we all know, the Democrats are the infighting party so this falls according to script. We don’t' remember any sort of negative stories about Gingrich back then about all this the same way there's stories about Pelosi. In fact, the chattering classes are already saying it'll cost the Dem's some sort of approval point. It should also be said that the Republican Senate had a fractious debate over a new Minority Senate person, with Trent Lott winning and not only is anyone debating it, but nobody seems that upset that the Republicans once again moved somebody into a leadership position who loves those gold old days of segregation.
We're going to post this now before the evil lawers at NBC demand it to be pulled down. What we're posting is the opening skit of last night's "Saturday Night Live" (which was actually kind of funny-- loved the Britney skit). Basically, it's their take on "San Francisco Values" with attendant jokes about alternate life styles and political correctness. It's pretty funny and kind of cutting (a friend thought it was a little too cutting) but well, we liked it.

Part of the reason why we're posting this is because, well, expect a lot more of this stuff coming our way. Pelosi's the most powerful Democrat in the land and it's the easy joke to make. The high organically shaped counter facing the window is ideal for solo dining with a good read.

A clean, well-lighted place brings us naturally to For Whom The Bell Tolls, as, like Maria after an intimate encounter with Robert Jordan, we felt the earth shake. Unfortunately, it wasn't due to the satisfaction of our carnal desires, can't be in a vegan place, could it? It just so happened that the earth literally shook, 4.4 on the Richter scale in Santa Rosa.

But it did spell out the question for us: is the food really this good, or was this just another quake? The answer is: pretty good, so that we even forget that no animal product was involved. You know, there are vegetarian restaurants which serve you meatless meatloafs made of tofurkey, and you think: this ain't right. Cha-Ya does not even pretend to replace meat, and just does its own thing, traditional Japanese way. For us, it's ideal: we are not conscious of eschewing meat, we're just enjoying a fine meal. Perchance he for whom this dishes is served is so satiated, as that he knows not it is meatless. We feel the same in South Indian restaurants (say, Udupi Palace) where the novelty (to us) of the cuisine hides the fact that it's vegetarian.
