Per Santa Cruz’s KSBW, a swimmer from the group reported hearing a “large splash,” prompting everyone to quickly head to shore.

When the victim didn’t return, a multi-agency search-and-rescue effort was launched, including the US Coast Guard, Monterey Fire Department, Seaside Fire, and CAL FIRE, with resources consisting of rescue boats, drones, and helicopters, per KSBW. When she rebuffed his advances and said “no,” officers allege Guest grabbed her breast and reached for her pants.

“He screamed ‘I’m a pimp,’ claimed he was armed, and threatened to kill her,” according to a Hayward Police Department statement. The woman fought back by hurling a can of Red Bull and striking Guest until he fled.

Guest was arrested on June 4. In a recorded police interview, he’s accused of admitting to the assault and threats but denying any sexual intent. Investigators noted Guest’s detailed knowledge of the local sex trade — terminology and known street corners — which matched the victim’s account.

He now faces felony counts of assault, criminal threats, and sexual battery. Bail is set at $200,000.

A defense motion ahead of Monday’s bail hearing claims Guest is unlikely to reoffend and questions whether Jane Doe clearly saw her attacker. Prosecutors counter that the victim’s prompt 911 call, physical evidence of her injuries, and Guest’s alleged own statements provide clear probable cause.

If convicted, Guest could serve up to several years in state prison.

Hayward Detective Lt. Maria Alvarez reminded the public that assaults targeting pedestrians remain a concern citywide. “We encourage anyone who feels unsafe walking alone at night to call us immediately,” she said, urging witnesses to come forward.

Guest’s attorney has not responded to requests for comment. Meanwhile, the victim is recovering from bruises and psychological trauma, according to court records. Her case will proceed through Alameda County Superior Court, where a judge will soon decide whether to lower Guest’s bail.

Image: Ritchie Quintero/Getty

Update: Parent and Four Teens Attack Dublin High Student, Football Players Break It Up

We don’t know why a parent and four other teens followed a high school student into a locker room and beat him up Friday, but the school’s principal is vowing that arrests are on the way.

SF News

dublin

High School

high schools

high school students

assault

attacks

Joe Kukura

We don’t know why a parent and four other teens followed a high school student into a locker room and beat him up Friday, but the school’s principal is vowing that arrests are on the way.

Update (August 28): Contrary to initial reports that five adults attacked the student, revised reports now say it was "A parent and four teenagers, ages 16 to 19" who committed the attack, according to KTVU. That report notes that Dublin PD investigators say that the victim "was confronted by a Dulbin High School parent. The victim retreated into the boys' locker room, followed by four unknown subjects and the Dublin High School parent. The four unknown subjects who were wearing hoodies, reportedly assaulted the victim."

"We know that none of [the four teens] were students at Dublin High," Dublin Unified School District superintendent Chris Funk told KTVU. "We were able to use our surveillance cameras to work with Dublin PD to help identify who they were."

Original story (August 27): It’s been a rather terrible start to the school year at Dublin High School over in the East Bay. On Monday of this week, the high school campus was placed on lockdown over police calls regarding a reported fight and weapon on campus, which turned out to be a false alarm. But we’re now learning through the Bay Area News Group that there had been a fight on campus last Friday, in which five adults reportedly attacked a teen student.

We do not know the condition of the youth who was attacked last week, but the News Group reports that the five adults “followed a teen boy into a campus locker room” where the assault occurred. It is confirmed that police and paramedics were on the scene, and per the News Group, the school’s principal Principal Maureen Byrne says that police have identified some suspects, and that arrests are forthcoming.

“We are outraged that this happened on our campus,” Byrne said in a message to parents. “School must be a place where all feel safe and supportive. We are working with the police to address this to the full extent of the law.”

Dublin Police confirmed an investigation into the incident, but said they are not yet ready to make a public statement. The department also reiterated Monday that no arrests had been made, and they have not determined a motive for the assault.

The fight was apparently broken up by a football coach and several football players who were also inside the locker room. So there seems to be no shortage of witnesses here, and obviously, parents will expect more information to be forthcoming.

Dublin High School is not to be confused with the newer Emerald High School, the city's second high school, which just opened for classes this school year. Dublin, which was the fastest-growing city in California in the 2010s, saw enrollment in its school district rise 92% in the last decade, necessitating the need for a second high school.

Dublin Unified School District currently serves around 12,900 students.

Related: Retired Boxer Gets Misdemeanor Citation In Alleged Attack on Filipino Teen Outside Gino & Carlo Bar In North Beach [SFist]

Image: Dublin High School via Facebook

Mission District Attack Victims Can Identify Their Attackers, Denounce Police Inaction on Cases

Two recent assault victims in the Mission District say they can point out or even name their attackers, yet both attackers continue to roam the neighborhood without consequences.

SF News

sfpd

Mission District

attacks

crime

Joe Kukura

Two recent assault victims in the Mission District say they can point out or even name their attackers, yet both attackers continue to roam the neighborhood without consequences.

A new story in Mission Local today highlights a pair of brutal Mission District attacks, which are unrelated. But they have a common thread that both victims can identify their attackers, yet the attackers continue to roam free. One of the attacks is from last week, another from January, and involving an attacker who has a history of allegedly using machetes and hammers against his victims.

The January attack was against a Joseph Miller, who spoke to Mission Local, and says he has since moved out of the Mission. But he can not only describe, but also literally name his attacker, allegedly Rafael Navarro, a known character around the 16th and Valencia Street parts. Navarro already has a restraining order against him for a separate alleged machete attack last summer. But the hammer attack against Miller has been sitting on SFPD’s desk, with the alleged attacker’s full name and known whereabouts, yet Miller says his repeated attempts to prompt SFPD to do something have been met with nothing but resistance.

“I’ve basically become a nuisance to them, is what I’ve gathered,” Miller told Mission Local. “He told me to stop doing my own investigating cause it could hurt the case — and I said, ‘Well, what the fuck are you guys doing about it?’”

We also have the case of the September 20 assault at Valencia and 18th streets that left a man with his ear half-severed off. That victim, Ramon Reyna, does not know the name of his attacker. But there’s some pretty explicit security video of the attack, and the attacker’s appearance is known.

Reyna’s GoFundMe describes the attacker as a Caucasian man with blond hair. Mission Local’s interview with Reyna yields the further information that he is “A man of about 6 feet 2 inches who looked to be in his 30s, wearing a backpack and a colorful blanket draped over his shoulders.”

“He is seen clearly in the video footage Mission Local reviewed and that Reyna’s family tracked down from nearby security cameras,” Mission Local writes. “What additional information is needed for police to track down these individuals is unclear.”

This comes against the backdrop of ongoing reports about a repeat stalker at-large who’s terrorizing SF women for years. DA Brooke Jenkins’s office did score some meager points for referring victims to victims' services, but we still see a pattern where alleged offenders that former DA Chesa Boudin was criticized for not prosecuting hard enough are, well, still not being prosecuted.

It could be that there is some delicate variable that could jeopardize an investigation, or some other unknown investigative best practice preventing action in these cases. But it seems the “police did nothing” narrative continues to apply no matter who the DA is.

Related: 14-Mission Driver Badly Beaten, Eyewitnesses Say Police Let the Attacker Get Away [SFist]

Image: Google Street View

Mission District Father Brutally Attacked at 18th and Valencia Streets In Seemingly Random Violence

We have a description of the suspect who is still at large, in a Tuesday night random attack that has reportedly left a man with a “half detached ear” and facial scars “for life.”

SF News

Mission District

valencia street

beating

attacks

Joe Kukura

We have a description of the suspect who is still at large, in a Tuesday night random attack that has reportedly left a man with a “half detached ear” and facial scars “for life.”

The Mission District Police Station is on the lookout for a suspect described as Caucasian and blond, for a brutal Tuesday night beating at 18th and Valencia Streets, according to KTVU. At roughly 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, the victim Ramon Reyna, described by KTVU as 51 years old (though KRON4’s reports says he’s 52) was walking his Chihuahua, when confronted by a man who tried to instigate his own dog to attack Reyna’s dog. When the dog would not attack, the suspect assaulted Reyna so badly he required “20 stitches to close the injuries in his forehead” and with a “half detached ear.”

"His right ear, all the way from the bottom of the left lobe, all the way up to the middle of the ear, his ear got detached," his son Erick Reyna-Gilmore told KTVU.

The suspect reportedly tried to get his own dog the attack the Chihuahua, and when that didn’t happen, the suspect went after the little dog himself. Reyna bent over to scoop up the pup to safety, but then the suspect kicked him and the face and beat him badly. Reyna got out his phone to film the man, but the guy swiped the phone and reportedly took off in the direction of Dolores Park.

A GoFundMe for Reyna’s medical bills describes the suspect as “a suspicious caucasian man with a red plaid shirt, a black dog, and blonde hair.”

If you have any information about the incident, you’re asked to call SFPD at (415) 575-4444. According to KRON4, “Officers have been canvassing the neighborhood, interviewing witnesses and collecting surveillance video for evidence.”

Related: SF Paramedics Describe Attack By Crazed Man In SoMa Who Chased Them With Their Own Ambulance [SFist]

Image: Google Street View

Woman Attacked In The Tenderloin

Wednesday morning near Jones Street and Steveloe Place in the TL, a woman was attack by three people, two women and one man, the latter of whom punched her in the fa...

SF News

attacks

crime

tenderloin

Brock Keeling

Wednesday morning near Jones Street and Steveloe Place in the TL, a woman was attack by three people, two women and one man, the latter of whom punched her in the face.

Speaking of attacks on public transportation, following the deadly subway bombing that rocked Moscow yesterday, Muni and BART have ramped up security. Dogs made their way through BART trains yesterday, "sniffing for anything out of the ordinary," and Muni police were on alerts (well, sort of) after suicide bombers "conducted brazen attacks a day earlier that killed 39 people" during rush hour attacks in Moscow.

"BART's nearly 200 police officers recently finished specialized terror training," notes KTVU. "But the agency says even those officers--and the 2,800 or so workers who've been trained to look out for anything suspicious-- aren't enough to keep an eye on every part of the system at once." Which is why you should keep an eye out for suspicious activity, folks.

Tatiana the Tiger's Official MySpace Memorial Page

Where to begin? Under supervision at San Francisco General Hospital, due to severe bite and claw wounds since last Monday, Paul Dhaliwal, 19, and Kulbir Dhaliwal, 23, were released into the wild yesterday afternoon.

In addition to the brothers' hospital release, NPR reports that all the big cats at SF Zoo will most likely be sent to a sanctuary of sorts and that the zoo director, Manuel Mollinedo, has been asked to step down. Yikes. All of this, it seems, ties into today's (riveting) Chron report on the San Francisco Zoo's sketchy past, where incidents of gross mismanagement - such as koala kidnappings, sheep rape, an elephant performing "a headstand on a technician, breaking her pelvis," and last year's arm-flesh removal of trainer Lori Komejan by Tatiana - have occurred over the 78-year history at the "cursed" park.

Emergency 911 Tapes of SF Zoo Tiger Attacks Released

Less than a week after the fatal tiger mauling at the SF Zoo, much of the news that has (slowly) unraveled from the Christmas Day tiger attack...

SF News

911

attacks

brothers

Christmas

Christmas Day

law enforcement

mauling

San Francisco

sf

sf examiner

sf zoo

tapes

tatiana

tiger

zoo

Brock Keeling

Less than a week after the fatal tiger mauling at the SF Zoo, much of the news that has (slowly) unraveled from the Christmas Day tiger attacks has been disheartening. From the downplayed info about the too-short tiger pen fence, conflicting evidence that the three boys taunted the Siberian tiger just before the attack, and that emergency protocol wasn't followed by SF Zoo employees, there are more chin-scratching facts to add to the list. Take, for example, the lack of concern the two brothers felt for their dead friend, Carlos. According to a law enforcement source, as the brothers were being transported from the zoo to the hospital, "one brother told the other not to talk to anyone." The source went on to say that "they were more concerned with their car in the parking lot and that it would be okay." (Sure, people have different reactions in time of grief, but still: Ouch.)

In more news, 911 tapes were released on Friday. According to SF Examiner:

Emergency personnel were first notified at 5:08 p.m. when a Terrace Café employee called 911 saying an "agitated man is claiming he was bitten by an animal," according to the transcript.

The two brothers attacked were initially considered mentally unstable by zoo personnel and "making something up" about a tiger biting one of them, the transcript says.

The transcript depicts a scene quickly descending into fear when at 5:11 p.m. the transcript read, "The tiger is out of the gate and they are locking up the zoo."

According to the cats over at the Chron, an "18-page 'Emergency Procedures' manual, written in 2006, spells out what zookeepers, guards and even the receptionist in the main office are supposed to do if a 'Siberian tiger is out of its enclosure' or any other dangerous animal escapes." (It's always the receptionist's fault, isn't it? The fall guys of the modern world, really.)

Basically, such emergency procedures as a "Code One" call, a shooting team, and a veterinary staff that is supposed to "' gather chemical immobilization equipment in preparation for anesthetizing the animal'" were not followed on Christmas Day's fatal tiger attack.

The Chron also goes on to report that some SF Zoo visitors claim that "that they were inside the zoo at the time, unaware that a tiger was loose until after the animal was dead." And that the most closely followed course of action was the one in which all "zoo custodians, handymen and popcorn vendors ...
