The 25-year-old man who was arrested last week for the killing of his 22-year-old girlfriend in the Sunset District reportedly told police that he was dry-firing his gun when he accidentally fired the fatal shot, apparently not knowing the gun was loaded.

She was in the shower, and he was apparently sitting or standing nearby when the gun accidentally went off, and 22-year-old Samantha Emge was killed, according to a new report. The recent San Francisco State graduate was found fatally wounded in a home on 22nd Avenue last Tuesday night, March 24.

She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

As KTVU explains, 25-year-old Nation Wood was working in security, and owned his own handgun. He was reportedly set to leave San Francisco to join the National Guard soon.

We learned not long after news of the shooting that it may have been accidental, but the full circumstances have yet to be made public. Wood remains out on $300,000 bail, and he was scheduled for a bail hearing today.

A preliminary hearing in the case, at which time we may learn more details about the dry-firing of the weapon and how it was that Wood did not know it was loaded, has been set for April 9.

Wood also attended San Francisco State, which is likely where he met Emge, though it is not clear whether he graduated. His LinkedIn page says that he served as "Advance Staff" in the White House from November 2023 to July 2025, which would mean he straddled the Biden and Trump administrations, after which he worked as a property manager at a Public Storage facility in the Bay Area.

We will update you as we learn more.
