We now have more information about the mysterious death that occurred on the playa over the weekend, during the burning of The Man.
The male victim who was found dead Saturday night at Burning Man in an apparent homicide has been identified as 37-year-old Vadim Kruglov, a Russian national who was a resident of Tacoma, Washington.
As the Reno Gazette-Journal reports, Kruglov was found in the area of I Street between 8 and 8:45 o’clock — with Black Rock City being laid out in a semi-circle, with sections denoted by times on a clock. He was apparently not near his own camp, because his friends had declared him missing, and said they had not seen him since Friday, August 29.
His friend, apparently a camp-mate, named Sofiia Shcherbakova, posted to Instagram on Tuesday, still saying that her friend Vadim had last been seen four days earlier. "His tent and belongings were left at camp, but he never returned," she wrote.
Earlier today, she confirmed the news of Kruglov's death, and posted a video showing them having fun and dancing at their Russian-speaking camp last week.
Shcherbakova also mourned Kruglov, saying, "He poured his soul into our community: building the camp, creating an art installation, always ready to help others, and being kind and responsive to everyone. His energy and contribution will forever remain part of the Burn’s history."
She also said that it was important that anyone who knew or saw him help retrace his steps, as his death continues to be investigated.
"It is crucial for us to retrace Vadim’s last days at Burning Man," she writes. "He was definitely at Mine Warrior, danced inside the pyramid, and may have appeared in videos from art cars or spent time with people in the camps."
Anyone with information is asked to call the Pershing County Sheriff's Office at 775-273-2641.
Kruglov was found Saturday around 9:14 pm, with sheriff's deputies on the playa called to the scene of an unresponsive person in a pool of blood. The annual burning of The Man had just gotten underway, and the area where the body was found was subsequently closed off to attendees.
Per the Gazette-Journal, after several days in which the sheriff's office sought help identifying the homicide victim, Kruglov was ultimately identified through fingerprints.
The Burning Man organization said it was doing anything it could to help with the investigation, including donating to a fund to offer rewards to secret witnesses, "so the perpetrator can be caught and brought to justice."
