A 20-year-old man was killed Wednesday evening near the 16th and Mission BART station in SF's Mission District, in the second shooting to occur in that vicinity in two weeks.
Shots rang out around 5:30 pm Wednesday at 16th and Mission streets, where a group of about 20 people had been gathered in the BART plaza on the southwest side of the intersection.
There was apparently a fight or brawl that ensued, prior to shots being fired, and one witnessed described hearing women's voices screaming.
Nearby witnesses told the publication that they heard four gunshots, and a man was then seen lying the ground.
Police arrived at the scene at 5:41 pm..
The victim was a 20-year-old Black male, according to Mission Local. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and died there of his wounds.
Mission Local further reports that police detained a man for questioning who was seen sitting on a bench near the crime scene, telling him initially that he was not under arrest.
This was San Francisco's 20th homicide of the year to date. At this time in 2023, there had been 31 homicides in the first seven months of the year.
Two weeks ago, there was a late-night shootout near 16th and Mission that led to a four-car crash, and one person was fatally shot.
It's not yet clear whether any arrests have been made in Wednesday's shooting.
