• We were excited by last summer’s news that the Filipino grocer Island Pacific Supermarket was opening an SF location near Alemany Boulevard and San Jose Avenue, but the chain has apparently scrapped those plans. Still, a rock climbing gym called Touchstone Climbing has signed a lease to take on the 34,200-square-foot space, and hopes to open in 2026. [SF Business Times]
  • A rare hydrothermal explosion (seen above) rocked Biscuit Basin at Yellowstone National Park Thursday, just a few miles north of Old Faithful. The explosion was caused merely by water turning into a whole lot of steam, but it destroyed the wooden walkway and caused the temporary closure of that area of the park. [NY Times]
  • Parts of the eastern Sierra are under a flash-flood warning because of a monsoonal moisture front that arrived Tuesday. The flood watch extends until Wednesday night for Mammoth Lakes, Bridgeport and Lee Vining. [Chronicle]
