Maybe it's all because he has a trans kid who won't speak to him, or maybe it's because it's not macho to vote Democrat anymore because fuck democracy. But Elon Musk has now gone all in for Trump, and that's further reason to feel doomed about this election.
Musk has been tweeting — Xitting? — on Xitter the past few days about Trump, formally endorsing him right after Saturday's attempted assassination in Pennsylvania, and saying "Good choice" following Monday's announcement of JD Vance as Trump's running mate. And over the weekend, Bloomberg reported that Musk had donated to a Republican super PAC, called America PAC, that is gunning to get Trump elected.
The Wall Street Journal confirmed that story Monday and reported that Musk has pledged a whopping $45 million per month, or about $180 million by November, to America PAC. The PAC has some clear traction in Silicon Valley, and has the support of Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale, the Winklevoss twins, and former US Ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft and her husband, Joe Craft, a coal company CEO.
America PAC is focused on get-out-the-vote initiatives in swing states — something that Democrats have generally put more efforts toward.
Musk, in his usual capricious fashion, responded "FAKE GNUS" to the Wall Street Journal story today, on Xitter. But then in response to an account named "EndWokeness," Musk seemed to then confirm the news.
Yeah

With Xitter now being a private company with no shareholders to answer to, and Musk being Musk, we should be in for a few months of seeing the platform go hogwild with every conspiracy theory, lie, and misdirection that comes from the right, alt-right, and extreme-ultra-racist right. And maybe even Trump will hop back on there now — won't that be a treat?
Trump has stayed firm in his use of Truth Social, which may be contractually obligated, but his desire to tap back into his 87.6 million followers on X must be very strong.
The only tweet that Trump has posted on his account in the last three years is this one, from last August, when his angry mugshot was released, referring to it as "election interference" and saying, in all caps obviously, "NEVER SURRENDER!"
Elon Musk has joined billionaire David Sacks and Sacks's "All In" podcast co-host, investor Chamath Palihapitiya, in throwing Silicon Valley-sized money toward the Trump campaign. Sacks had been "all in" for DeSantis until his campaign fell apart, and he's reportedly now been convinced that Trump will keep us out of war with Russia — blaming the "woke-neocon alliance" for sending weapons and money to Ukraine and stoking a possible World War 3.
Sacks was reportedly introduced to Trump by JD Vance, whose links to San Francisco and the venture capital world were brought back to light Monday following the running-mate announcement. Vance spent about four years living in San Francisco in the last decade, during the time he was writing his bestselling memoir Hillbilly Elegy, which focuses on his family in Ohio and heroin addiction. And now, despite his newfound cred among Ohio voters, Vance has been instrumental in linking Silicon Valley up with Republicans.
In previous election cycles, Silicon Valley money has tended to flow more toward Democrats, and/or Libertarian candidates and causes.
Musk has skewed more Libertarian in the past, called himself a "moderate," and says he voted for Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden in recent elections. But his swing to the right has been very clear in the tone and content of his social media postings of the past three years or so. He was particularly incensed about COVID shutdowns that impacted his Tesla assembly plant in the East Bay, and has made clear that he despises all talk of pronouns and anything deemed "woke" by the anti-woke mob on Xitter.
One might even say that Musk has been radicalized by his own platform. But it's clearly more complicated than that.
Writing for MSNBC, Zeeshan Aleem says today that Musk's enormous financial commitment and ideological swing toward Trump combined with his control of X is "a reminder of how dangerous it is that we have no regulation of social media companies and how acutely vulnerable our civil society is to being hijacked by billionaires who want to reshape the world to their liking."
