• The FBI unsealed their criminal complaint against accused UC Berkeley arsonist Casey Goonan, who’s accused of torching a UC Berkeley Police car on June 1. Surveillance video places Goonan on the scene of the crime at 5 am on the morning of the incident, according to the FBI, and more damningly, they found a social media post allegedly posted by Goonan with photos of the burnt vehicle and the words “Death to amerikkka Glory to the martyrs.” [Berkeley Scanner]

  • The Chronicle has a deep dive into why the SF neighborhood Dogpatch has its nickname, and it appears the old tale about stray dogs and slaughterhouses may not be accurate. The name is more likely to be an originally derogatory name taken from the Al Capp comic strip “Lil Abner,” and apparently police called the then-blighted neighborhood “Dogpatch” in the early 1970s, but the neighborhood started reappropriating the name positively when the Dogpatch Cafe opened in 1998.
