SF's Mission District — specifically the area around 22nd and Valencia — went eerily quiet Thursday afternoon after construction crews ruptured two large gas lines.
The incident happened around 2:20 p.m. near 22nd Street and the small stretch of San Jose Avenue that runs as an alley between Guerrero and Valencia. An alert went out from the city, and as KRON 4 reports, members of the fire and police departments were going door to door in the vicinity telling people to evacuate. Evacuations were called for all residents within a block of the site in all four directions. No injuries were reported, and the leak was reportedly capped at 2:50 p.m.
The SFFD reported on Twitter that the rupture occurred on a 2-inch and a 4-inch gas line, and complete repairs would take three to four hours. As of 3:28, the department said the evacuation order had been lifted.
Video from KRON 4 appeared to show Valencia Street completely blocked to traffic, but that may have been temporary.
