The 2018 Michelin Guide to SF Bay Area restaurants, which had been set for its annual big reveal two weeks ago, on October 12 including a scheduled release event at The Charter Oak in St. Helena was wisely postponed as wildfires threatened huge swaths of wine country, killed over 40 people, and burned upwards of 8,400 structures, according to new estimates. Now the guide will be released tomorrow, Wednesday, October 25, as Reuters reports.
The annually updated and much revered guidebook, whose ratings are compiled by a group of anonymous inspectors who rotate regularly, will release the new updated star ratings in between the release of Chicago's guide last week, and New York's new guide, which comes out Monday.
In a release on October 11, the company acknowledged "we understand this is a time for grief and recovery, not celebration," and they announced a donation to the Red Cross "in honor of the restaurants, wineries and communities affected by the wildfires."
It is unclear whether any event for the guide's release has been rescheduled, as Michelin's reps typically host an event in each city and invite all the restaurant owners and chefs who receive stars. As of now, the Tubbs, Nuns, Pocket, and Atlas Fires are all upwards of 90% contained, but still smoldering in and around Napa and Sonoma.
As Eater notes, this was the first time that the venerated guide had made any kind of postponement since it first began publishing US guidebooks in 2005.
This year's Bib Gourmand honorees, which are restaurants that receive a special recommendation based on quality and value though do not receive any stars, were announced on October 5.
Last year was a banner year for the Bay Area in that it was the first time since the guide has been published that we tied New York City for the total number of three-star restaurants, with six in total.
You can pre-order the 2018 guide on Amazon here. Its public release is not until December 15.
