An overnight shooting in one of San Francisco's public housing complexes claimed the life of a 40-year-old man this week, sending the city's homicide number for the year to 51 cases.

Police said Friday morning that the shooting occurred some time between 7 p.m. on Wednesday and 8:24 Thursday morning, on the 100 block of Dakota Street. That's an address within the Potrero housing development, one of SF's oldest public housing projects that contains over 1,280 residents, their website says.

As of Friday morning, the San Francisco Police Department had few details to release on the slaying, saying only that the victim was pronounced dead on arrival. No arrests have been made in the case, nor was any suspect information available as of publication time.

When contacted by SFist, the San Francisco Medical Examiner's office identified the deceased as 40-year-old Kenneth Babers. He did not have a fixed address, an ME's office representative says.

An SFPD spokesperson tells SFist that Babers' death brings the city's homicide count to 51 for the year, following the Saturday morning death of Susana Robles Desgarennes, reportedly in a domestic violence murder-suicide allegedly carried out by her partner, Angel Raygoza. In 2016, SF ended with 59 homicides, there were 53 in 2015, 45 in 2014, 48 in 2013, 68 in 2012, and 50 in 2011.
