On this very hot day, residents of one section of the Oakland Hills as well as students and staff at Merritt College were evacuated after a brush fire broke out near Mountain Boulevard and Edwards Avenue, near I-580.
It appears the fire is already under control and no longer a threat to about 50 homes that were evacuated, as ABC 7 reports via Cal Fire. Residents were evacuated by the Oakland Fire Department around 1:30 p.m. along streets including Bayview, Skyview, Campus Drive, Bohansen Road, Ridgemont, and Viewcrest.
As of 2 p.m. the fire was 50 percent contained as air tankers and crews on the ground were quickly snuffing it, according to ABC 7. The Mercury News made it sound more dire, saying it was only 20 percent contained as of that hour, and it was threatening 100 homes.
Because of the hot, dry weather, the National Weather Service issued a red-flag warning for the East Bay Hills, meaning there is an extra high risk of wildfires.
