Residents of San Francisco’s District’s 6, where well-heeled Supervisor Jane Kim is soon to be termed out, could have been rightfully concerned over the lack of established candidates running for that particular seat. The only declared D6 candidates, according to the Department of Elections, were pro-development activist Sonja Trauss and “barista” Jason Lee Jones. But that changed overnight (well, yesterday afternoon) when Board of Education commissioner Matt Haney filed to run for District 6 supervisor, according to the Examiner, and he's already lined up a who’s-who of progressive endorsements.
Haney, currently serving as the second-youngest SFUSD Board of Education commissioner ever (he’s 33), had a little coming-out party after filing his papers Tuesday afternoon. The Chronicle reports that supervisors Hillary Ronen and Sandra Lee Fewer were on hand at an “exuberant pep rally” to celebrate Haney’s filing of papers, as was CNN pundit Van Jones. Aaron Peskin, Jane Kim, and Community College Board member Tom Temprano have also endorsed Haney. So unless Bernie were to come down from on high to endorse Haney too, that’s about as close to a royal flush of endorsements that a San Francisco progressive candidate can get.
The instant consensus behind Haney forces rumored candidate, Aaron Peskin’s chief of staff, and (hey-o!) one-time SFist contributor Sunny Angulo out of the race. “The District Six community has and will continue to be my family, so ensuring a unified progressive front for this election is the most important thing I can do today,” Angulo told the Chronicle. “I’ve met with Matt, believe we have shared values and look forward to continuing the work together.”
Sonja Trauss, who told the Chronicle she looks forward to a “robust discussion,” has the endorsement of state senator Scott Wiener and has previously wrangled $10,000 out of Yelp founder Jeremy Stoppelman. So she is not to be counted out.
If you’re an absolute geek for Board of Supervisor races, realize that this election is still not for another 13 months. The election in question here will not be held until November 6, 2018. Yes, there is a June 5, 2018 primary, but the only supervisor seat up for grabs that day is the District 8 seat currently held by Sup. Jeff Sheehy. Shockingly, there are no San Francisco ballot measures nor any qualified California statewide measures currently scheduled for November 7, 2017.
