A fight outside a Russian Hill-area hotel turned deadly Friday morning, when a man was pronounced dead at the hospital after engaging in an altercation with a group of suspects.

Police say that they were called to the 2500 block of Van Ness Avenue, which is between Union and Filbert Streets, at 2:15 this morning, on reports of a man who was injured "in a verbal altercation which became physical," San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Officer Giselle Talkoff says.

The site of the fight, as reported by multiple news organizations, was the sidewalk just outside the Da Vinci Villa, a tourist hotel located at 2550 Van Ness.

The victim, a 36-year-old male who has yet to be publicly identified by the San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office, was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where Talkoff says he succumbed to injuries sustained in the confrontation.

NBC Bay Area reports that the deceased man might have been a tourist visiting the city, but as of publication time police could not confirm that detail.

The Chron reports that "Several suspects were detained shortly after the altercation." According to Talkoff said homicide detectives are questioning the detained individuals to determine their involvement, if any, in the brawl.

A police spokesperson confirms that this death is San Francisco's 28th homicide for the year, following the fatal Mission District stabbing of 45-year-old SF resident Aaron Johnson. In that case, former SFUSD teacher's aide Lyris Wolfe was arrested for the slaying.
