The victim in Friday's tragic, dramatic collision with a Tesla commuter shuttle on eastbound I-580 has been identified as 50-year-old Sroeuy "Philip" Khin, a deputy in the Alameda County Sheriff's Office who was heading home at the time after a night shift at the Santa Rita Jail. As ABC 7 reports, Khin was a Cambodian-born father of four who lived in Stockton, and he worked "long hours" for the sheriff's department to help support his family. He also reportedly worked for the Stockton Police Department.

Khin was driving a white Volkswagen Beetle that was struck from the rear near the Altamont Pass on Friday morning, killing him immediately. As we saw from the photos earlier, the entire rear portion of the VW appeared sheared off but it seems it was actually compacted by the force of the impact.

Per ABC 7, while the incident remains under investigation, it seems that Khin's vehicle was either stalled or moving very slowly in the second lane of the freeway. California Highway Patrol Captain Christopher Sherry tells the station, "At the same time, the driver of a 2016, white Tesla touring bus was also driving Eastbound 580 east of Grant Line. For reasons still under investigation, the front of the tour bus collided with the rear of the Volkswagen Beetle."

The Tesla shuttle bus was ferrying employees to Tesla's battery-making plant in Lathrop, outside of Tracy, and was apparently traveling at 65 miles per hour at the time of the crash. The driver earlier told first responders that he had the rising sun in his eyes and failed to see the smaller vehicle until it was too late.

51 passengers on board the bus, as well as the driver, all escaped with only minor injuries.

Khin leaves behind a wife and four children, and friends describe him as having been "very outgoing and very social."
