Hue Lounge & Nightclub, the relatively recent replacement for what was formerly known as Atmosphere at 447 Broadway, has been the site of some unruly sidewalk situations in recent months, most recently a brawl involving a group of women the night of St. Patrick's Day. As KRON 4 reports, police were called to the club just after 1 a.m. Saturday and surveillance video shows them arriving as a scuffle is underway just outside the club's entrance in which at least one woman is pushed to the ground.
The surveillance video was apparently provided by neighbors or neighboring businesses who are concerned about the trend of these "weekly" sidewalk fights. Another camera angle shows a fight, possibly involving some of the same women, breaking out in a side alley.
Police say that some of the patrons involved may have been detained, but no arrests were made as part of this incident.
Hue opened in July 2015, and it was initially run in part by former Café du Nord and Swedish American Hall owner-operator Guy Carson, with former Entertainment Commissioner Terrance Alan consulting. Alan told Hoodline at the time, "We are aimed at the after-work young professional cocktail scene with food and a nice craft beer selection and great wine selection," and he promised the neighborhood that "Absolutely no party buses" would be allowed something that has been an ongoing problem in bringing unruly groups of already drunk people to the Broadway corridor.
As you can see from the website listings, the club is primarily booked Friday to Sunday with dance parties and DJs each night, and VIP tables and bottle service available, with Sundays devoted to bachata (a dance that originated in the Dominican Republic) and salsa.
Neighbors tell KRON 4 that Saturday's incident was hardly isolated, and they're "scared to talk on camera out of fears that violence could be directed at them," though it's unclear who they're implying would be committing that violence.
Perhaps they have a right to be concerned about lapses in security given that just two weekends ago a 21-year-old man was fatally shot just a few blocks away, near the intersection of Grant and Green Streets, right around the time that bars and nightclubs are having last call.
Back in 2014, two men were stabbed in a nightclub brawl on the next block up from Hue, and that followed on some years of relative calm since a crackdown by the SFPD and the city that began after a spate of nightclub-related violence plagued the neighborhood a decade ago.
