Just before 1 a.m. this morning police responded to reports of a shooting on 19th Street. There, they found a male shooting victim on the sidewalk between Mission and Capp Streets, a block known for establishments like Beauty Bar, Bissap Baobob, and the Royal Cuckoo Market.

Update: After receiving criticism from several readers, this post, which originally cited KRON 4 coverage of the shooting as "near a nightclub called Bissap Baobab," has been updated to clarify that there is no connection between that business and the shooting.

"We all at Bissap Baobab are VERY appalled that you are using our name to talk about the killing that happened," one representative of the business writes.

According to another KRON4 report published after the original post, the victim was attending another business on the block, not Bissap Baobob. According to Mission Local, the victim was identified as Jorge Martinez and was found outside of San Francisco Haircuts at 3364 19th Street, per a Royal Cuckoo Market employee.

Another critic of SFist's coverage wrote "If the reader is unfamiliar with the area and the events of the recent shooting, one might assume that there was a direct connection to Bissap Baobob, it's owner, and/or its patrons. Was that your intention? If not, then why was the article written as it was?"

Baobob, a business SFist has frequently highlighted for its dance parties and events, was invoked as a neighborhood landmark. Nonetheless, some readers saw this as a problematic editorial choice. "In the midst of the extreme gentrification that's going on in SF, Bissap Baobob is an island of authenticity and is representative of the true spirit of The City," one wrote.

Another emailed to say. "SF has been gentrified and places like Bissap Baobab — Black/African Owned — are particularly impacted by articles like this that suggest that there is a connection with Black-owned restaurant/night club and violence. This establishment, as you mentioned, has been in the community for 20 years+, and Bissap Baobab has been working hard everyday to bring positive vibes to the community it is a part of

Martinez was a 43-year-old man, SFPD tells SFist, although other reports indicate he was celebrating his 44th birthday at the time he was death. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The incident is being investigated as a homicide, and would mark SF's 10th homicide of the year, following last weekend's shooting in North Beach.

A gofundeme page for Martinez's burial expenses is here.
