THANKS, California legislators. Since you guys killed a proposed end to Daylight Saving Time last August, we'll all be losing an hour of sleep this weekend when the time change kicks in. Thanks a lot.
A couple of years ago, Last Week Tonight asked "Daylight Saving Time - How Is This Still A Thing?"
“If you’re like most Americans, you’ve been groggy all day after losing an hour of sleep to Daylight Saving," they asked. "And as you struggle to remember the clock on your f***ing microwave, you may have wondered: Why is this happening?”
Well, it's happening because CA senators, including SF's own Mark Leno, killed San Jose Assemblyman Kansen Chu's proposal to end the arcane practice.
Leno's concern, voiced at the time, was that there are "some real unintended consequences" if CA voters agreed to pick one time and stick with it year-round. For example, If we abolished DST, for half the year we'd be four hours behind the East Coast instead of three. Leno, it should be noted, termed out of his day job in 2016, and doesn't seem to have much going on besides mulling a run for mayor in 2018. It's easy to vote for DST when you don't have to get up early on Monday, Mark!
Whatever. I'm over it. Sure, Bloomberg says DST is "dumb, dangerous, and costly," but so are many things we're being forced to live with in 2017. So, remember to set any clocks you still have forward by an hour, as we're skipping ahead 60 minutes at 2 a.m. this coming Sunday. See you in the coffee line! I'll be the one in an impotent rage as I struggle to remember how to reset my watch.
