A 10-month-old boy suffered some traumatic injuries after being attacked Friday by the family dog, a German shepherd-Mastiff mix named Charlie. ABC 7 reports that the mother was in the next room when she heard her seven-year-old son telling the dog to stop growling. She then heard him screaming and she entered the room to find the dog attacking the baby, and she suffered a bite to her hand in the process of separating the dog from the infant. The boy suffered bite wounds to his head, and underwent surgery at Oakland Children's Hospital.
The boy's father later told ABC 7 that the boy was doing well, and he was busy caring for his seven-year-old, who was traumatized by the incident as well.
The Chronicle further reports that Charlie was shot and killed by Concord police after taking an aggressive stance and appearing like he may lunge at officers in the yard outside the home.
The mother says she raised Charlie since he was a puppy and that he had not shown signs of aggression, but a neighbor tells ABC 7 that that is not true, and that the dog had attacked her dog several years ago. Contra Costa Animal Services is apparently investigating.
