YouTuber Meghann Cuniff has done a digital transfer of some amateur Super 8 film footage from 1950 showing a trip to San Francisco, including a ride over the Bay Bridge, views of Nob Hill, and a Bay tour by boat that includes some up-close looks at Alcatraz while it was still an operational federal penitentiary. History buffs will enjoy the (albeit shaky) views of the city populated with vintage cars from the '40s.

As you may know, Alcatraz only operated as a prison from 1934 to 1963, and during the era this film was shot, famed inmates Robert "Birdman of Alcatraz" Stroud and George "Machine Gun Kelly" Barnes were housed there.

One close-up included in the footage is a sign warning boats that they couldn't dock there, saying only government boats were permitted within 200 yards:

Also shown in the film are the various buildings on the island that were burned down in 1970 during the famed Native American occupation of Alcatraz.
