A JetBlue flight to San Francisco from New York's JFK airport is about an hour late this afternoon, a delay presumably tied to the hubbub in the plane's cabin this morning: A Hunter College professor named Matthew Lasner and his husband, Brooklyn lawyer Dan Goldstein, were escorted off the plane after Goldstein either confronted or harassed, depending on your politics and sense of decorum, another couple on the flight: Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.
As Gothamist wrote this morning, the members of the future first family were flying coach (!), maybe to mingle with the masses but more likely because they were flying in a large group, with their children and extended family, and the commies at JetBlue make it pretty comfy all around and not just in first class.
According to a tweet from Lasner's now wisely deleted account, Goldstein "expressed displeasure in a calm tone" to Ivanka. In TMZ's account of the run-in, Goldstein said, "Your father is ruining the country... Why is she on our flight. She should be flying private." And according to TMZ's source, "the guy had his kid in his arms as he went on the tirade." He and Lasner were removed from the flight, allegedly screaming that "You're kicking me off for expressing my opinion?!!"
My immediate concern, of course, was for neither family, but for myself and San Francisco. Were Ivanka and Jared planning to grace us with their presence during the holiday season? Hanukkah here is lovely, but if the family didn't like what happened on the flight, they for sure would not enjoy the Arctic reception they can expect should they ever decide to set foot in San Francisco in the next four years, amenable tech execs notwithstanding.
Good news, then, for all parties: "A spokesperson said [Ivanka] and Kushner were on a flight to San Francisco en route to Hawaii," NBC Bay Area reports. Hawaii does make more sense, although it's also where the Obamas are at the moment. Ah well. "Mele Kalikimaka" to them all.
The JetBlue flight to SFO is expected to arrive at 2:40 p.m., and the only flight I see out to Hawaii this afternoon is operated by United and departs at 4:30 p.m. Of course, maybe Trump and Kushner are taking Goldstein's advice after all and flying privately this time around. If you do see Ivanka at SFO this afternoon, perhaps best to keep it brief — a simple "Aloha," very dual-purpose, will do.
According to JetBlue, Goldstein and Lasner are now on a different, later flight to San Francisco themselves, which sounds like a more fitting final destination for that couple.
