Starting today, the big flat "multi-use" field on the north side of Dolores Park, a.k.a. the park's main party space, a.k.a. Fixie Flats will be closed for what Rec and Parks is saying will be an annual period of rest and maintenance, in preparation for the busy spring and summer months. As Mission Local reports, the turf in this half of the park will be off-limits until February 10.
Hoodline talked to Rec and Parks spokesperson Joey Kahn who explained that they "will be aerating the lawn, fertilizing, seeding, and adding some compost mulch," and that all of this will be done over the next week or two and then allowed to rest and regenerate through mid-February.
This is the first such annual closure of this part of the park since the major renovation that took place between 2014 and 2015, and the reopening of this half of the park in June 2015.
The remainder of the park, i.e. the south side and the Gay Beach, will remain open, but it's unclear if any similar maintenance will be taking place there before springtime.
Meanwhile, Alamo Square, which has been undergoing maintenance since May, will reopen by late winter, which may mean February or early March.
