When some construction trailers appeared near the now-shuttered McDonald's on Van Ness Avenue at Golden Gate, it was easy to imagine that a developer had some plans in store for the derelict property. After all, as SocketSite reported in March of last year, a 13-story mixed-use building is being considered for the site. However, those hoping for new housing at the underutilized corner got a bit of a reality check today when SocketSite followed up and reported that the telltale construction signs are actually for the adjacent-running Bus Rapid Transit project.
The plans to replace the McDonald's are reportedly under consideration but have not yet been approved. That decrepit McDonald's isn't going anywhere soon, in other words.
We should expect to see similar evidence of construction along Van Ness Avenue over the next few years as the BRT project's expected completion date is sometime in 2019. The work will include tearing up the traffic median and 193 trees, and putting in sidewalk corner bulb-outs.
When completed, it should look something like the rendering below on the left. Whether the boarded-up McDonald's will still be on the corner of Van Ness and Golden Gate at that time is anyone's guess.
