When Tartine Manufactory opened two months back as a larger offshoot of 18th Street's original Tartine, something was missing. That something was ice cream. I mean, we were told there would be ice cream! But Cookies and Cream, the ice cream stand with its own side entrance at the Manufactory from Elisabeth Prueitt took a bit longer, opening quietly just last week according to Inside Scoop.

I'm glad to say it's worth the wait and still surprising: light, almost whipped, and richly creamy. That's thanks to a combination of jersey cow and water buffalo milk made in Carpigiani soft-serve machines. So far the flavors are Ethiopian Yukro-infused coffee ice cream, Askinosie dark chocolate ice cream, Fior di Latte ice cream, and Concord grape sorbet. It's $3.50 for a small cup, $5 for a large cup, and $5.75 for a cone, which ain't cheap, and toppings from granola to salty-spicy pineapple will run you 75 cents each.

The best part, though, may well be the cone — it's not just a waffle cone, it's like a stroopwafel cone with a soft, caramel interior. We've been promised retail ice cream eventually, but for now, if you want to bring something home it will have to be an ice cream pie. Those come in lemon ginger, PB&J, or rocky road, at $16 for a very small small and $40 for a sizable large.
