A man was shot was shot three times by Vallejo police last night after he allegedly entered a local Starbucks and pointed an assault-style weapon at officers. According to a press release from Vallejo PD, two officers gave chase on foot while the man continued to "manipulate" his gun which appeared to have malfunctioned.
"The two officers drew their weapons in an attempt to protect themselves," reads the release. "The suspect fled through the parking lot, westbound on Magazine Street. The officers pursued the suspect on foot. The officers engaged the suspect near the intersection of Magazine and Sheridan Streets as he continued to manipulate the weapon and presented himself as a lethal threat to the officers."
Police say the man was in possession of a loaded handgun in addition to "a high capacity drum magazine," and that he was wearing body armor. The Chronicle reports that this all started at 8:50 p.m. near Lincoln Road and Pine Street, and surveillance video embedded above obtained by KRON4 appears to show the suspect entering the Starbucks, turning quickly around and running, and then two officers in pursuit.
CBS 5 reports that last night's incident may be related to the apparent accidental shooting of a two-year-old child earlier that day in Suisun City — although how exactly is unclear.
The suspect was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. The police officers were uninjured.
