Nothing gold can stay it seems, even in the Golden State. We learn today via the Sacramento Bee that California's First Dog, a 13-year-old Pembroke Welsh corgi named Sutter, has fallen critically ill with cancer and will likely die. The golden-hued Sutter has been part of Governor Jerry Brown and wife Anne Gust Brown's family since 2010, and in that time has become a favorite of many in the state capital.

Sutter's health began to quickly deteriorate this past Friday, and ABC 7 reports the pooch underwent emergency surgery shortly thereafter. Tragically, veterinarians were unable to remove all the cancer.

"As you can imagine, this is a very hard time for the governor and the first lady," Governor Brown's spokesperson Deborah Hoffman explained to the channel. "Sutter is a very important part of their family. He's a very important part of the governor's office family, really, and the entire capitol family. So we're all pulling for him. He's a fighter. We're hoping he'll pull through this."

Humans aren't the only ones pulling for Sutter's recovery. California's Deputy First Dog, Colusa "Lucy" Brown, is surely hoping he gets better soon.

The two are practically inseparable, and share a Facebook page, so should Sutter not persevere the loss will be immense.

Another Brown spokesperson, Evan Westrup, told CBS 5 that while the results of the biopsy are still out, “the prognosis is likely to be very poor.”

While we all wish Sutter the swiftest of recoveries, we also know the First Dog has lived a full life — as evidence by the numerous photos below.

Get well soon, Sutter. We're all rooting for you.
