Beatbox, the former gay nightspot on 11th Street that called it quits after five years in July, will get new life under the ownership of longtime SF impresario Gina Milano, formerly of Bambuddha Lounge fame and former owner of Le Club (where Keiko a Nob Hill is now). As Milano tells Hoodline, she's had her eye on the space also formerly home to the straight venue Fat City for a while, after helping to get Audio off the ground next door, and she's transforming it into a nightclub and venue called Halcyon (314 11th Street near Folsom), that she hopes to have open by the first week of November.
The choice of name, she tells Hoodline, was because it's "'a cool word' that's used to refer to blissful, carefree memories or a golden era, as well as the name of a popular dance record store in Brooklyn, where visiting DJs in the '80s and '90s would commonly stop in before shows."
The plan is to be a dance club on Fridays and Saturdays, with DJs and some live performances, but to branch out into other genres and events to keep the place active throughout the week something Beatbox failed to do. She's planning Wednesday cabaret nights with 56 cabaret tables in the space, bottle service, and various types of performances. She's also talking about "line dancing in the evening and yoga-dance classes."
For the renovation, she says she's giving the brick-walled, industrial space some more polish, and installing some new lighting, including a "state-of-the-art" projection mapping system, and new LEDs on the beams.
Halloween weekend, she says, will be reserved for a couple of private opening events, but look for the big grand opening around November 5 or so.
