Police are seeking a male cyclist suspected of threatening a female driver and slashing her car's front tire with a knife. The incident happened Monday night at 20th and Mission Streets, and the woman shared video of the man exclusively with KRON 4, saying she was terrified as it happened, and that she immediately called 911.
The video shows the man approaching the driver's side window, attempting to open the car door, knocking on the window, and brandishing a pocketknife. He then leans down near the front wheel, and she says he used the knife to puncture her tire.
She further claims that after filming this she dialed 911, and the cyclist came back to harass her further while she was on the phone, attempting to break in her car window. She says she was so scared for her life that she would not give her name and refused to let her face appear on camera.
The incident calls to mind the story of road rage cyclist Ian Hespelt, who recently pleaded guilty to charges stemming from an August 2015 Critical Mass altercation in which Hespelt was filmed attacking a Zipcar with his bike lock and breaking one of its windows.
This suspect, who appears to be in his 40s or 50s, remains at large. The only clue to his identity in the video is a glimpse of an ID badge clipped to his clothing, though nothing on it looks to be readable.
Anyone who may recognize the man should call the SFPD's Anonymous Tip Line at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 with SFPD at the beginning of the message.
