A 66-year-old man found dead in a small pond in Golden Gate Park last month was allegedly tortured over a three day period before his murder. So reports CBS 5, which notes that his accused killers, 20-year-old Stephen Billingsley and 37-year-old Nikki Williams, go by "Pizza Steve" and "Evil," respectively.
Both Billingsley and Williams were arraigned in court yesterday, and police say the two men tortured 66-year-old Stephen Williams over the course of three days before knocking him unconscious and dragging his body into the pond.
CBS reports that court documents allege how Billingsley and Williams pulled Stephen Williams into Alvord Lake on May 22 — striking him and dunking him repeatedly. The next day they reportedly beat Williams unconscious near Haight and Clayton streets. The following day, May 24, court documents allege that the two (and possibly a third suspect) beat Williams unconscious before dragging him to and leaving him in the pond.
Williams's body was discovered later that day by a gardener — floating face down.
“This is an ongoing investigation, however, the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death are incredibly tragic,” spokesman for the district attorney, Max Szabo, said in a statement. “All human life is precious, and whether you live in a palace or in a park, we will pursue those who resort to violence.”
Update: According to the Chronicle, Billingsley and Williams were just two of a group of assailants who beat and tortured the man, and they say it was done out of a desire for "street justice" because they believed he had been masturbating near children in the park. Neither of the suspects have longstanding ties to San Francisco and are transients who were not acquainted with the victim.
