A SFFD stolen ambulance crashed and caught fire this morning following a police chase that traveled from San Francisco onto the Bay Bridge and to Treasure Island. The wreck occurred on the east-bound Treasure Island off ramp, and forced the temporary closure of the exit.
According to Officer Grace Gatpandan, it all started at 8:01 a.m. this morning when SFPD learned that an ambulance had been stolen from Mason Street. SFFD's Twitter account informs us that it was stolen "during a medical emergency." Officers soon saw the ambulance, and gave chase. The driver made it onto the bridge and to the exit before the driver lost control and collided with the concrete barrier.
SFPD was able to take the suspect into custody, and the off ramp was temporarily closed. While the exit reopened around 10:15 a.m. this morning, residual traffic delays are expected. CHP is now on the scene managing traffic and the cleanup.
