No one likes to be told they're stupid, and yet that's exactly what a new ad blanketing San Francisco implies. "10% down," the ad by lending company Social Finance, Inc. reads. "Because you're too smart to rent." San Francisco, of course, is a city of renters, and Curbed points out that the ad's language might be considered "insensitive."

Indeed. The advertisement, which appears in several spots around the city, seems to have struck a nerve — going so far as to piss off notoriously hard-to-rattle BART spokesperson Taylor Huckaby.

Did the company ever consider that maybe, just maybe, some people were renting because home prices in this city are insane, and not because they aren't smart enough to evaluate the possible benefits of home ownership?
