The San Francisco Police Department is investigating a most worrisome blaze, after an unknown suspect tried to catch a homeless man on fire as he slept yesterday afternoon.
According to the SFPD, officers were called to the 100 block of Hyde Street, which is between Golden Gate Avenue and Turk Street at 5:45 p.m. Sunday.
When they arrived, they learned that a 64-year-old homeless man's sleeping bag had been caught on fire, with him inside it.
Police say that the man "was sleeping on the public sidewalk...when he felt heat coming from his lower leg area."
He "awoke to find his sleeping bag on fire" and an unknown suspect fleeing the area, according to the SFPD.
The man was able to escape his bedding swiftly enough that he was not injured, police say.
As of publication time, police did not have any additional suspect information available. If you know anything about this crime, you're asked to call SFPD's Anonymous Tip Line at 415-575-4444 or to text a tip to Tip411 with SFPD at the beginning of the message.
