A pretty significant, SUV-sized sinkhole opened up beneath an Uber SUV Tuesday evening at Mission Street and New Montgomery, causing the car to partly fall in and get stuck and freaking out the Los Angeles family inside. As they tell ABC 7, they "kind of thought it was a flat tire," only to get out of the car and realize they could have been swallowed whole by the earth, never to be heard from again.
The Chronicle reports that the cause of the sinkhole, which is 12 feet by 5 feet and first appeared around 5 p.m., was a ruptured sewer main under the street that is 141 years old.

The sinkhole is currently being repaired, but there's no word on how well they're going to be able to repair the five-foot high sewer main, which dates to 1875, and which kind of seems likely to break again. The Public Utilities Commission made a fine assessment for CBS 5 saying "age is likely a factor" in the rupture.
As of now, Mission Street is closed between Second and New Montgomery and the 14 and 14R buses are being re-routed.
Update: It looks like the street has reopened and Muni service down Mission has resumed, but the nine-foot-deep hole itself will not be repaired until Thursday at the earliest, per CBS 5.
KRON 4 has further footage from the scene Tuesday evening, below.
