The body discovered yesterday morning at Apple's Cupertino headquarters was that of an employee, officials yesterday confirmed. Although the cause of death has yet to be confirmed pending the completion of a coroner's investigation, initial statements from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, combined with reports from the LA Times that a gun was found nearby the body, suggest the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"When deputies arrived they found a male subject down and determined he was deceased," Sergeant Andrea Urena informed SFist via email. "After further investigation it appeared there was no foul play and no other individuals were involved. This appeared to be an isolated incident and no employees or members of the public are at risk."

The company issued a statement, reported this morning by ABC 7, calling the entire situation "tragic" while declining to publicly identify the employee.

"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a young and talented coworker," said a company spokesperson. "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends, including the many people he worked with here at Apple. We are working to support them however we can in this difficult time."
