BART Police today released for the first time video of the suspect in last January's shooting aboard a crowded BART car. The video shows the suspect walking through what appears to be Pittsburg/Bay Point Station as well as a shot of what looks like the man hopping a turnstile as he exits the system at West Oakland.
Police have yet to identify the man who on January 9 shot and killed 19-year-old Carlos Misael Funez-Romero following a prior altercation between the two aboard a Tri Delta Transit bus, but they hope releasing this video could change that.
"Police are still following up on other leads," reads a BART statement, "but releasing video that shows how the suspect walks and maneuvers may help identify him. Anyone who thinks they know who the suspect is or has any information about the homicide is encouraged to call BART Police."
The shooting took place around 7:40 pm as the BART train stopped at the West Oakland Station. Funez-Romero was shot multiple times, and fellow passengers described a terrifying scene as they ducked for cover.
"Everyone just got down on the ground," passenger Brad Chapin told the Contra Costa Times. "People were screaming. It was chaos. We didn't know if there were terrorists there or what."
The shooting, in addition to being a tragedy in its own right, sparked outrage when it was revealed that no surveillance footage of the killing itself existed as roughly 77 percent of BART cameras are fake or broken.
If you think you know who this man is, you can leave an anonymous tip at 510-464-7011.
