A 14-year-old boy is dead Monday morning, after he was fatally shot just steps from a trail that runs next to BART in Richmond.

According to Richmond Police Department spokesperson Lieutenant Andre Hill, police were alerted to the shooting at 9:22 this morning, when an area ShotSpotter registered the gunfire.

When they arrived at the scene, they discovered the teen suffering from multiple gunshot wounds as he lay on the Richmond Greenway trail, which is between the the 3300 block of Ohio Avenue and BART.

Though responders rendered aid to the teen, he died at the scene, Hill says. As of publication time, he had yet to be publicly identified.

Suspects say a male suspect was spotted running from the scene, but so far the shooter has been neither identified nor caught. According to Hill, officers continue to search for the suspect, with a BART police K-9 unit expected to join the hunt later today.
