Good news, everyone! The south side of Dolores Park has a new reopening date, and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department wants to celebrate the occasion with a (very tame) party. On Wednesday, January 27, the city is holding a "light up the new Dolores Park" party, and they want you to be a part of it.
"Bring your... glow-in-the-dark gear, light-up props, [and] LED accessories" the above video invite reads. The party is scheduled to run from a sensible 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., which seems odd for a glow-in-the-dark themed party, but the sun should set around 5:30 p.m. so we guess that gives park-goers an hour or so to enjoy their light-up props.
Note, despite all this stuff about "glow-in-the-dark gear," actual glow sticks are discouraged, because they can potentially kill the grass if broken open.
The new opening date is a rescheduled one, after last week's opening celebration was postponed due to rain.
When we previously wrote about the then-scheduled January 14 opening date, we noted that the construction on the south side had gone significantly more smoothly than the comparably troublesome north side — a process that was bedeviled by nature and man alike. We've crossed our fingers hoping that now that the work is actually done, fears about inclement weather won't continue to push back the park's opening.
Weather permitting, expect next week's opening party to be a crowded affair as it's been a long time since people have been able to enjoy a Dolores Park not chopped up by chain-link fences.
