Wildlife officials have been saying for a while that the drought is driving coyotes into residential neighborhoods in search of food and water, and this photo certainly supports that assertion.
The "huge" coyote was caught on camera at around 8 a.m. at Steiner and Broadway Streets by Ally Verba, a long-time San Francisco dogwalker. (I don't know Ally at all, but her Instagram depicting the dogs she cares for is fantastic!)
This was Verba's "First time ever seeing a coyote on Steiner Street," she says. If Carol Singleton, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, is right, it might not be the last. "We are basically seeing that animals have to go farther in search for food right now," she told the Bay Area News Group this summer.
"Coyotes may be heading into residential neighborhoods in pursuit of prey, such as rabbits," they report. Or, as we know from the recent incidents at Stern Grove, small domesticated pets. So take care!
Photo submissions for Photo du Jour, Morning Links and Day Around the Bay are gladly accepted right this way in the SFist Flickr Pool, or tag them on Instagram as #sfist. We want to see what you're seeing!
