A seven-week-old kitten who's been named Smurf, because its previous owner/abuser dyed its fur blue, is recovering and receiving treatment at the Nine Lives Foundation shelter and clinic in Redwood City after some apparently awful experience as another animal's chew toy. As ABC 7 reports, the kitten was dropped off at a San Jose shelter with 20 deep puncture wounds to its body, and the complete dye job which someone who fed the cat to a dog (probably) found amusing.

Smurf is alive and doing okay, though, and they say he's already made friends with another kitten named Cherry, with whom he'll be placed in foster care next week.

A petition has been started here to demand justice for Smurf, who will be up for adoption at some point.
