Like in cities across the globe tonight, San Francisco police are preparing as best they can for the possibility of a terror attack in the wake of the November attack on Paris and various accumulated threats since then. There haven't been any specific threats against San Francisco according to KRON 4, but nevertheless the SFPD has a plan to patrol the streets tonight on foot, on bikes, and undercover.
As CBS 5 reports, the Coast Guard will be establishing a safety zone in the waters adjacent to the Ferry Building extending about 1000 feet into the Bay during tonight's fireworks. No boats will be allowed into the zone without explicit permission.
Says SFPD spokesman Officer Albie Esparza to KRON 4, "We’re having additional officers compared to years prior because of the worldwide global events that have been occurring. We’ve been monitoring that and so we want to make sure that San Francisco remains safe for everybody coming to San Francisco to celebrate New Year’s Eve
The city expects 100,000 visitors tonight for the festivities, per NBC Bay Area, with the fancier folks who planned ahead celebrating indoors with fireworks views at restaurants like Waterbar, Epic Steak, and Americano. FunCheapSF notes that the crowd along the Embarcadero tends to be about 200,000 strong.
As discussed before, BART will run until 3 a.m. per usual on NYE, and and Muni is free all night.
