There's really nothing left to say. The only good thing is that this embarrassment of a season ends in two weeks. The 49ers could win one more; I hope they don’t. You should hope they don’t also if you want what’s good for the team.
Of course, a draft pick isn’t really going to change anything. No, the only hope the 49ers have at this point is for someone to clean house. Fire sale. Everyone must go. That includes Jim Tomsula, Geep Chryst, Trent Baalke, and most of all Jed York.
Unfortunately, based on what CBS sideline reporter Jay Feely had to say yesterday, it doesn’t sound like anyone’s going anywhere. According to the chat Feely had with Al Guido (who is set to take over the role of team president), everyone is "confident with Tomsula going forward." Because why wouldn’t they be confident with a dude who looks totally lost on the sidelines, has gone 1 for 7 with challenges, fails to motivate the team to show up with energy and play hard, and can’t get his team to focus and make plays?
It also doesn’t appear that Jed York will go anywhere anytime soon. The smart thing to do, I’m sure we’d all agree, would be for him to just take a step back and let someone who knows football come in and take over. He can save face and the team might actually have a shot and turning itself around. But whether it’s ego or ineptitude, it doesn’t appear anyone in charge is able to clearly see just how screwed up the entire management system is and how imperative is that they shake things up.
Just to be clear: I’m not blaming all of the teams’ woes on the front office and coaching staff. We have some major player issues, especially on offense namely, the offensive line, but also the receiving corps. Still, while there have been way too many dropped balls, there’s a major problem on all sides when the 49ers are constantly in third and long situations and are unable to convert those. They were 0-for-12 on third down until the 4th quarter when they managed to convert their final two opportunities. Like: that’s really, really, really, really bad. Really bad. Also, I don’t know if Gabbert was just trying to be nice, but the fact that he said the offensive line is doing a “tremendous job” is a bit concerning. Perhaps the nine sacks last week and the four sacks yesterday shook his brain up and he no longer knows what the word “tremendous” means. Otherwise it just means he’s not that smart and that’s a little scary considering I’m 99% sure he’s going to be our QB next year.
Levi’s was less than half full at kickoff yesterday. I’m a season ticket holder and I sure as hell didn’t travel all the way to Santa Clara for what was guaranteed to be a debacle in the rain. (Though I did sell my seats, so, in theory, they weren’t empty.) Though I despise when fans boo, that’s what happened at halftime. And by the fourth quarter, the stadium was a ghost town. I feel bad for the players when that happens. It must be so demoralizing. But even Torrey Smith got it. “I don’t blame then,” he told reporters. “It’s not fun to watch right now.”
The problem, of course, is that the stadium no one wants to go watch football in? It’s a $1.3 billion dollar stadium that just opened last year. The problem is that it is where Super Bowl 50 is going down in less than two months and none of the locals have a single nice thing to say about it. The problem, really, though, is that no one in charge cares. They get their money from the season ticket holders whether we show up or not. And it’s not like Super Bowl 50 won’t sell out within seconds.
No, the 49ers fans no longer matter. And there’s nothing we can do about it. They don’t care if we don’t show up to the games. They don’t care if we fly banners over the stadium. They don’t care if we choose hikes and brunch over watching the game on TV. Don’t believe me? Let Jed York prove it to you when he does absolutely nothing to turn this train wreck of a team around in the offseason.
Next Week: SF travels to Detroit to play the Lions, a team who sucks almost as much as we do. Fingers crossed we lose because, again, losing is the only thing that’s good for us at this point. Now who has some Prozac I can borrow?
