Disturbed and distraught following the killing yesterday of 26-year-old Mario Woods, a limping and visibly unwell black San Francisco man with a kitchen knife whom SFPD encircled and shot to death in front of multiple witnesses Wednesday, organizers Black Lives Matter Bay Area have called for a vigil and protest this evening in an event listing posted to Facebook.
Woods' death came to the public's attention through bystander video, shared widely on Twitter and elsewhere, leading some to liken the killing to an execution by firing squad.
Woods was suspected of stabbing a man in the area where police found him with a kitchen knife last afternoon. Unresponsive to non-lethal force and stumbling near an officer, several opened fire. Officers administered CPR and woods was soon pronounced dead on the scene.
The vigil and protest will begin at 3rd and Gilman at 5:30 or 6 p.m., per a discrepancy between calls for a memorial on Twitter and Facebook.
Tonight come out and support. #MarioWoods pic.twitter.com/ZcpBVOuhRq
