The man seen receiving a serious, lengthy beating in SF's Mission district by two Alameda County Sheriff's deputies last week via surveillance video, 29-year-old Stanislav Petrov, underwent surgery Wednesday to repair some possibly permanently disabling damage to his hands and arms, as KQED reports.

Petrov’s mother, Olga Petrova, said her son would undergo surgery to install “pins and plates and metal parts, which he’s going to have in his arms for the rest of his life.”

She said doctors told her Petrov, 29, is likely to lose substantial use of both his hands.

“Some of his fingers could have some partial movement — at least a pointing finger — and other fingers will be not able to do anything,” she said. “The joints were absolutely destroyed.”

Petrov also sustained cuts and severe swelling on his head.

Alameda County Public Defender Brendon Woods called the deputies' use of force "insane," and the incident will likely be going to court in either San Francisco or Alameda County, or perhaps in federal court. The two deputies' identities have not been released at the request of their attorneys, according to a spokesperson for the Alameda County Sheriff's Department.

Meanwhile San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi was the one who initially released the video, calling it "reminiscent of the Rodney King beating." Both the FBI and the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office have opened investigations into the matter as well.

Also seen arriving on the scene in the video are members of the SFPD, and Adachi says they may be culpable as well, though department spokesman Albie Esparza says SF officers had no involvement in Petrov's arrest.

Says Adachi, "I do ultimately think this is an investigation that should go to the U.S. attorney. The silence is sort of deafening from law enforcement. You haven’t heard any official word from them."

Petrov is implicated in the alleged theft of a 2015 Mercedes and a collision with two patrol cars, and he gave chase to Alameda County Sheriff's deputies from San Leandro over the Bay Bridge, at times at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. He then crashed into a parked car in the Mission and fled on foot, ultimately getting pulled to the ground and beaten near the corner of Stevenson Street and Clinton Park, near Duboce. The beating goes on for an indeterminate amount of time, because the video contains multiple 10-second lapses.

As Mission Local reports, Petrov suffers from "multiple mental disorders," and officers later recovered a gun on the scene presumably belonging to him.
