Excellent news, kids: Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is on target to be open on December 17 in the historic, totally refurbished New Mission Theater, right on schedule. And, as a release tells us, the first movie on the marquee will be the highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII, The Force Awakens.
AND, tickets go on sale today just as soon as the newest trailer hits the internet, and those can be found here. Alamo Drafthouse is offering some special collectors'-item deals too: $5 extra gets you a special collector's edition of Alamo's movie magazine Birth.Movies.Death; $10 gets you a Mondo-designed commemorative pint glass; and $15 gets you both.
As Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League says, "I was seven when I first saw Star Wars Episode IV. Nearly 40 years later, I still remember exactly where I saw it and every detail of the experience. I can think of no better way to launch our new flagship, the historic New Mission Theater, than with this hugely anticipated film."
Alamo Drafthouse started in Austin, but League and his wife met in the Bay Area and have family here, and decided to expand to the New Mission back in 2012. Now, after an extensive retrofit and historic $10 million renovation of the 1916 movie palace, Alamo Drafthouse at the New Mission will be the first theater in North America to boast the use of Sony’s 515DS dual-4K projectors.
As discussed earlier, there will be five screens in total, with the grand hall downstairs having 320 seats, and four smaller theaters upstairs with seating ranging from 34 to 150 seats. And food and beverages will be served in the theater via a "silent service," lit-up tables next to each seat, and little numbered flags. There will be 32 beers on tap in addition to a full dinner menu featuring pizzas, wraps, and snacks. Each theater is a bit different, but you can get a sense via these menus in Austin.
Like at the Sundance Kabuki, seating will be assigned and can be reserved ahead.
Get excited!!
