Jazz legends, dance parties and more highlighted at this year's San Francisco Jazz Festival.
The 33rd Annual San Francisco Jazz Festival runs from June 9 to June 21 in the Hayes Valley neighborhood and features dance parties, the best of the Bay Area's jazz scene, an homage to John Coltrane, Joni Mitchell, Radiohead, Kendrick Lamar and more.
Here are five of the many reasons you're going to want to check out this year’s San Francisco Jazz Festival.
Contrary to the seated nature of many other jazz festivals, San Francisco's big music bender features plenty of dance-floor shows, with GRAMMY-winning jazz-funk band Snarky Puppy, rising neo-soul star Ester Rada, Cuban percussion master Pedrito Martinez, and many more.
2. Celebration of John Coltrane's A Love Supreme
SFJAZZ continues with their year-long celebration of the 50th Anniversary of John Coltrane's A Love Supreme with a shimmering steel guitar-based tribute by gospel/blues stars the Campbell Brothers.
3. Kendrick Lamar, Radiohead, and John Legend
No, these acts aren't playing during the festival, but one of the leading lights in jazz and R&B, Robert Glasper will perform with his trio groove-oriented renditions of music by Kendrick Lamar, Radiohead, John Legend, Joni Mitchell, Nirvana, J-Dilla, and others over two nights.
This year's festival will highlight rising young local acts, including Tiffany Austin, Quinn DeVeaux, Wil Blades, Smith Dobson V, Brass Magic, and others.
This year's festival closes out with a celebration of one of Cuba's greatest composers, Ernesto Lecuona, and three of the best modern-day pianists from Cuba and the Dominican Republic — Chucho Valdés, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and Michel Camilo — all on one stage. The night will conclude with an after party at the SFJAZZ Center featuring Cuban percussion master Pedrito Martinez and his energetic band.
