An armed suspect was killed this morning in what authorities say is the first fatal police shooting involving Oakland city police in two years.

Police were called to the scene by firefighters just before 7:30 a.m., Saturday morning, at the intersection of Lake Park Avenue and Lakeshore Avenue, with the reports that a man in a BMW was passed out and armed with a weapon. Firefighters tired to assist the man, says KGO, but called police when they spotted the handgun. According to SFGate, the car parked at the end of the offramp of 580 was determined to be the same vehicle chased by police earlier that morning after a burglary in San Francisco.

Police surrounded the vehicle and taped off the area and fired non-lethal rounds to break the car's windows, in an effort to wake up the man inside. Officers engaged with the suspect around 8:40 a.m., when one officer used their Taser and another used their gun. The man died later at the hospital.

At this point it is unclear if the man in the car was a suspect in the burglary. Authorities say he had a loaded handgun in the car along with an 30-round clip in the car.

The shooting remains under investigation and footage from body cameras will be reviewed said Chief Sean Whent.
